As July comes to a close, it's still worth taking a moment to recognize the 61st anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA), which was signed into law on July 14, 1965.

For more than six decades, the OAA has reflected our nation's commitment to supporting older adults by funding home- and community-based services that help people age with dignity, independence, and connection. Through the national aging services network, these programs provide nutritious meals, transportation, caregiver support, health and wellness programs, elder justice services, and so much more.

Adults age 60 and older have much to be thankful for because of the lasting impact of the Older Americans Act. At the same time, we must continue to advocate for the programs and services that make it possible for older adults to remain healthy, safe, and engaged in their communities. By speaking up for these vital resources, we help ensure they remain available for today's older adults and for generations to come.

What a wonderful time at the Fair Bluff Senior Center Watermelon Festivities yesterday! 🍉☀️

It was great to see so many senior center participants enjoying a fun-filled day with local vendors, delicious food from the food truck, and lots of excitement playing Bingo. Events like these bring people together and highlight the importance of staying active, connected, and engaged.

A special thank you to Summer Britt, Senior Center Program Coordinator, for organizing such a fantastic event, and to Kristie Massey, Director of the Columbus County Department of Aging, for her continued leadership and commitment to enhancing the lives of older adults in Columbus County.

Brunswick County’s own Patti Sacchetti has been inducted as the new alternate to the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (NCSTHL) at its 2026 Annual Session.
Sacchetti is a gerontologist serving as a care manager in Brunswick County. In this role, she has many opportunities to be a strong voice for seniors in Brunswick County. She identifies herself as a champion for issues impacting and influencing how well seniors age and continue to live meaningful lives in their communities. She follows the mission: Guide / Connect / Advocate on behalf of seniors.

Family caregivers and their loved ones living with dementia enjoyed a wonderful morning of fellowship, and brunch at the beautiful Bluewater Waterfront Grill, and our lovely music was provided by Tara Jenkins, certified music therapist in Music & Memory. 🎶
