It’s time for another staff highlight! Meet Kim, our Chief Operations Officer and the person who helps keep so much moving behind the scenes at WARM NC.

“I love working at WARM because the work has purpose. I noted upon the first day I arrived here that I had turned my personal passion for helping people into my purpose and have found a HOME for my purpose with WARM. Every day, my team and I have an opportunity to change what home feels like for someone who may have nowhere else to turn for help with home repairs.”

We’re so lucky Kim found a home for her purpose here. 💙

We are grateful to the Landfall Foundation for awarding WARM NC a $50,000 grant to help launch our First Responder Referral Initiative, a key part of WARM’s Home Safety Intervention (HSI) Program!

This early investment will help WARM respond more quickly when first responders identify low-income older adults and people with disabilities whose emergency calls are connected to unsafe housing conditions. Falls, inaccessible entrances, unstable steps, missing handrails, and mobility barriers can drive repeated 911 calls, avoidable injuries, and preventable hospital visits.

First responders can stabilize an immediate crisis, but they cannot repair the home conditions that make the next emergency more likely. Through this initiative, WARM will create a direct referral pathway from emergency response to targeted home safety repairs, including wheelchair ramps, handrails, grab bars, safer entrances, and other accessibility modifications.

By addressing the source of these emergencies, HSI helps interrupt the cycle of repeat response, reduce strain on emergency and healthcare systems, and support residents’ ability to remain safely and independently at home.

Thank you, Landfall Foundation, for investing in this important first step and helping WARM build a stronger connection between housing, health, and public safety in New Hanover County!

Meet Hazel, a retired nurse and one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet.

For Hazel, repairs like better lighting, bathroom grab bars, safer steps, and a ramp mean she can continue moving around her home with greater safety and independence.

“WARM NC left me in a really great and safe place. You don’t know how good that makes you feel.”

We’re so grateful Hazel welcomed us into her home and shared what these repairs have meant to her. 💙

Happy National Nonprofit Day! 💙

Today feels like the perfect opportunity to let our homeowners and volunteers do the talking. Their words are some of our favorite reminders of why this work matters and why we’re so grateful for every person who makes WARM NC what it is.

Unfortunately, this is the reality for many of our homeowners.

Housing insecurity can look different for everyone. Sometimes, it looks like owning your home, but not being able to afford the repairs it needs.

A small leak gets worse. A soft spot in the floor becomes unsafe. Steps become harder to navigate. And when there isn't money available for the first repair, each new problem can make an already difficult situation more expensive.

For many homeowners living on limited or fixed incomes, there isn't always room in the budget for an unexpected home repair, especially as the cost of everyday necessities continues to add up.

These are the situations we see every day at WARM NC, and an important reminder that housing stability isn't only about having a place to live. It's also about being able to safely stay there.
