DEPUTY CHIEF APPOINTED INTERIM FIRE CHIEF

During the Aug. 16 Agenda Briefing, Wilmington City Council voted to appoint Deputy Chief Jon “Steve” Mason as Interim Fire Chief effective September 12, 2021. Chief Mason’s appointment will follow the departure of longtime Fire Chief Cecil V. “Buddy” Martinette, who is retiring after more than 13 years in the post and more than 45 years in public service.

“I have known Chief Mason for many years and have great confidence in his abilities as a leader. He is immanently qualified to lead the department during this interim period,” said Interim City Manager Tony Caudle.

“Chief Mason has played an integral role in developing a modern and highly performing fire department for the City of Wilmington. City Council’s decision to appoint him as Interim Fire Chief is a testimony to his experience and professionalism, and our trust in his ability to oversee the vitally important work of our fire department,” said Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo.

Chief Mason has served as Wilmington Fire Department’s Deputy Fire Chief since June of 2017. He previously served in the roles of Chief of Operations, Shift Commander, Training Officer, and Safety Officer. Chief Mason began his career in the Fire Service in 1987 at Wrightsville Beach Fire Department, serving three years there before starting his career with Wilmington in 1990. He holds a Masters of Public Administration from Columbia Southern University.

“While Chief Mason’s qualification for this work is clearly evident, you should also know that he is an outstanding person who his highly regarded by his peers in the profession,” said Chief Martinette. “Steve cares very deeply about public service and is mindful that our services must maintain value and be relevant to the community’s current and future needs.”

Thank you for sending a couple of your guys out and brightening my day!! Even though one was a NY Giants Fan! Happy Holidays. Stay Safe & Healthy!! Thank you for all you do!
Is the burn ban still in effect for our county?
I am a Crisis Coordinator with Citizens Assisting Citizens, but I was also a volunteer firefighter and EMS worker, in Nes Hanover County, for several years. I wanted to pass this along, in hopes that our community might be able to help this Department in some manner. https://www.facebook.com/660749010618311/posts/4024883797538132/?sfnsn=mo&extid=z15XEKSUvyNmVLYG

Tonight my neighborhood, NorthChase, will be “Lighting up NorthChase” with red and blue lights, on our homes. We are doing this in honor of those lost on 9/11 and also as a show of support for our first responders. We want you to know we appreciate you and realize that you have been under tremendous stress for months. We want to make our Firefighters aware we are doing this, so they can ride through and possibly bring their families to see the lights. We will keep them on display for at least 3 days. God bless every single one of you! ❤️🚒❤️
Send some trucks our way today if you can!
Thank you to NHC for making a birthday special. My 5yo thanks you and totally made this a memorable birthday. We thank you for your service and wish you a safe tour.
Why are first responders, when 911 is called, refusing to go into buildings?
