REMEMBERING SGT. SCHWARTZEL 💙

“It is with deepest sadness that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Sergeant Adam Schwartzel. He passed away this morning while out of the city in Salemburg, North Carolina. He was there for training. SGT. Schwartzel has been a key member of the WPD since July 15, 2002 when he was first sworn in and a friend to many. For more than 20 years, he has put service above self and has been a valuable part of this community. During his time with our agency, he has worked in various roles including patrol, the traffic unit, and the first supervisor of our Virtual Response Unit, among other duties.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time but we will keep the public informed as we learn more details. This is a tragedy for all. Our prayers and condolences are with SGT. Schwartzel’s family as they mourn his loss alongside his brothers and sisters in blue,” said Chief Donny Williams.

It is with great sadness that we let the community know that Lieutenant Obbie Blanton (retired) passed away yesterday. It's an understatement to say that LT. Blanton spent his career with WPD. He grew up being a part of the WPD family, following in his father’s footsteps who was also a retired WPD Lieutenant and preceded him in death.

During his career, Lt. Blanton supervised many officers and he worked in many corners of the PD. He was a wealth of institutional knowledge wherever he went. He will be dearly missed by all.

Funeral arrangements are still being made and will be shared when available.
