Do you know a worthy volunteer who should be honored? Always thought your neighbor is amazing for feeding the homeless twice a month, and needs to be thanked? What about that girl scout leader who has been leading for 20 years? What about that baseball coach who has no kids in the program but still coaches? Those are the people we want you to nominate, they don't have to be "super human, leaping tall building volunteer", while they are in our eyes no matter if it is one hour a week for 30 years, or 40 hours for 3 years, tell us their story and let the judges decide. Nominate them by 10/26 forms available by email, or go to www.capefearvolunteercenter.org, questions call 392-8180 and chat with Tasha or Sabrina. Don't miss this opportunity to honor the one who serves near you.

Kids Voting affiliates provided the opportunity for students to participate in local elections this fall. For the complete
election results, please visit the Kids Voting USA website. Here are some of the impressive total votes cast for each
of the affiliates that hosted a 2011 mock election (a few of the totals are still being tallied):
Kids Voting Shakopee (MN): 1,130 students voted
Kids Voting Northern Kentucky: nearly 1,900 students voted
Kids Voting Arizona: 111 students voted in the Phoenix Mayoral Run-off & 81 students
voted in District 18 Recall
Kids Voting Talawanda (OH): 1,447 students voted
Kids Voting Mesa County (CO): 11,560 students or 54 percent of the students voted
Kids Voting Central Ohio: almost 50,000 students voted
Kids Voting Chester County (PA): 1,492 students voted
Kids Voting Alaska: 1,349 students voted
Kids Voting Greater Las Vegas: not quite 500 students voted
Kids Voting Western New York: 9,610 students voted
These affiliates received some great media coverage. Below
Here is a link to an article about the importance of civic education http://www.edutopia.org/blog/civic-education-mission-schools-anne-obrien.
The article also describes a civics assignment called "Quest" a senior project taught by Cheryl Cook-Kallio a high school civics teacher in California. The project requires students to explore an interest, conduct some research and then design and complete a related service project. This is exactly what the KVUSA contest, "Making an Impact" is looking for. The contest is recognizing 6th-12th graders doing exactly this. The contest requires students to write a 3 page essay about a service-learning/civic engagement project and encourages students to send in pictures and videos. Students don't have to complete a new service-learning project. If they have finished a project sometime this year, they can write an essay and enter the contest. "Making an Impact" is not only for students participating in Kids Voting. The contest is open to any 6th-12th student. The deadline is January 1st. I have attached the packet of information for your reference. Remember all these materials can be found at http://kidsvotingusa.org/EYT2012/
Here is another great example of the projects "Making an Impact" contest is looking for. This one is within an affiliate territory, Kids Voting Durham. Read the article here http://heraldsun.com/view/full_story/16155351/article-An-unsafe-walk-?instance=homesixthleft
