(7)

Services are primarily offered for New Hanover County residents. We provide emergency shelter and services to victims of domestic violence in New Hanover County, as well as outreach, prevention, and education programs. We recognize the impact of domestic violence on all of our lives and work to increase community awareness and understanding of the problem. We are powered by dedicated volunteers committed to making a difference in the lives of families in their community. We receive and are dependent upon support from local sources: civic groups, religious groups, businesses, private citizens, and governments. Income is also generated locally by the agency's operation of the Vintage Values Resale Shops. Our agency is a non-discriminatory, equal opportunity agency, partially supported by the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act, the North Carolina Council for Women, and the Governor’s Crime Commission. Governing documents, policies, and statements are available for public review upon request.

Mission: We will work toward the elimination of violence and oppression against women and their children, provide emergency, and support services for victims/survivors of domestic violence.

A farewell message from our Executive Director:

Hello everyone,

After serving as the Executive Director of Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. over the past 35 years, I will be leaving my position on September 30, 2020.

It has been my honor and privilege to be a part of our incredible agency, working alongside the most amazing nonprofit team ever assembled! It will be difficult to leave this place I love and the valuable work we do in the community. I will deeply miss being here, but I will leave knowing that the agency is left with an incredibly talented, dedicated, passionate, and capable team. It has not gone unnoticed that they have stretched hard and I cannot wait to see what else they accomplish!

To our community partners, funders, volunteers, board members, and my mentors, you have inspired my spirit by your energy and your desire to serve and improve our community regarding issues of domestic violence. Throughout my time here, I have learned from you. Your impact on my daily reality reinforced my drive and focus on improving our agency and the services we provide. I cannot thank you enough for your help, guidance, support, and the thousands of kindnesses big and small you have given to me. Because of you, our agency’s services and I have been changed … for good.

I will remain grateful for the faith of a newly formed board who put their trust in me (back in 1985) to begin and grow a domestic violence agency in a community new to me. What a ride it has been! My work began in a young movement, around kitchen tables or in shabby offices, guided by the wisdom of survivors telling us what they needed. To this day, I believe that, at the core, our work must be founded on the voice and experience of survivors. I am grateful to them for opening their hearts to us and educating and inspiring us more than they will ever know.

Sending much appreciation to all of you for the many opportunities and joys over the years.

Embrace the future and thank you!

Warmly,
~Mary Ann Lama

It is with sadness we tell you that Mary Alice Davis, long time Vintage Values volunteer, recently passed away. She was one of our original volunteers that began in 1986 when we opened our Castle Street location. She loved Vintage Values and volunteered every Friday. She was a great inspiration to customers and to everyone that met. She will be missed but her memory will always be with us.

Within our agency’s mission statement, we pledge to work toward the elimination of domestic violence and related oppressions. Our agency works day in and day out to help create safer homes and communities for all. Our vision is of a just society and we believe that everyone has a right to be safe, empowered, and free from violence and the fear of violence.

At this time, we grieve with the nation over the death of George Floyd and many others due to racial injustice. Our condolences go out to the families, friends, and communities who are mourning.

We must work together in condemning these acts of violence and dismantling the systems of oppression that enable them. We know that all oppressions are interconnected, and that people cannot feel safe in their homes or in their communities when they are facing discrimination, trauma, and daily fear.

We must center our work on the voices, experiences, and lives of people experiencing the injustices. Only when people are heard and understood will they begin to heal. Only when communities listen and understand will transformational change occur.

No one organization offers all the solutions and we must lift each other up in forging new collaborations and creating new opportunities for collective growth. We are grateful for those who are speaking up against racial injustice, for our community leaders who are setting an example of understanding and compassion, for our community allies and partners, and most of all for the survivors of abuse and injustice who open their hearts to us and educate and inspire us more than they will ever know.

Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc. stands in solidarity with all those working to end racial injustice and intersecting oppressions. We further affirm our continued commitment to creating and embracing meaningful change guided by our vision of a just society.
