โš ๏ธ Hurricane Isaias update (8/4, 8:30 a.m.) โš ๏ธ

๐Ÿ”บ Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach last night around 11:10pm as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85mph. The storm passed just west of Wilmington bringing strong winds and some tornadic activity. There are several downed trees, branches, and power lines throughout the area.

๐Ÿ”บ Tree crews are out clearing streets in coordination with Duke Energy crews. Call 910-341-7852 to report trees or tree limbs blocking roadways w/in city limits (leave a message if no one answers).

๐Ÿ”บ Crews are actively working to restore traffic signals as power is returned. Treat intersections as a four way stop if a traffic light is out. This means the first to arrive is the first to drive.

๐Ÿ”บ Power outages are widespread throughout New Hanover County. View a map of the outages at: https://outagemap.duke-energy.com/#/current-outages/ncsc.

๐Ÿ”บ If using a generator, do so safely. This includes not using one inside a home or enclosed space and keeping it at least 20 feet from the building.

๐Ÿ”บ Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.

๐Ÿ”บ Avoid wading in flood water, which can contain dangerous debris. Underground or downed power lines can also electrically charge the water.

๐Ÿ”บ Document any property damage with photographs. Contact your insurance company for assistance.

๐Ÿ”บ Residents should call the emergency public information hotline at (910) 798-6800 with questions or for support (Spanish speakers are available). Please use 911 only for true emergencies.

๐Ÿ”บ The City of Wilmington remains under a declared a state of emergency until further notice.

๐Ÿ”บ City offices are closed today, Tuesday, August 4th.

It's never a good idea to go out driving around after a storm until you are told it's safe to do so, but if you must go out, watch for the following:

โ€ข Downed trees blocking the road ๐ŸŒณ
โ€ข Other obstructions in the road like trash/recycling carts ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ
โ€ข Downed power lines that may be live ๐Ÿ”Œ
โ€ข Flooded streets ๐ŸŒŠ

If you come to a flooded road, DO NOT try to go through the water. There may be obstructions under the water that you can't see and the water may be deeper than you think. Remember, Turn Around, Don't Drown!

Wilmington, let's have an honest conversation. We've never experienced something quite like COVID-19 before. The uncertainty of everything -- from the illness itself to job security -- can be overwhelming. Thereโ€™s a lot we donโ€™t know about this situation, but thereโ€™s a lot we do know: We know we're working hard to ensure the health and safety of our residents, visitors, and employees. We know we're following the precautions put forth by the CDC and state. We know, that no matter what, weโ€™ll be with you every step of the way.

Weโ€™ve created a web page (www.wilmingtonnc.gov/coronavirus) dedicated to local updates and resources. It includes everything from operational details to a small school toolkit to keep the kids busy and learning while out of school. The website will be updated regularly, as will our social media feeds.

Take a deep breath. Wash your hands thoroughly. Keep at least six feet apart from everyone. Tip if you get takeout. The resiliency of our community is unmatched. No matter if it's a hurricane or a pandemic, we know how to adapt. Wilmington, we will be ok because we are #ILMStrong.
