Legislation authorizing the award of the Medal of Honor to retired Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr. was signed into law by President Trump on March 26, 2026. This action clears the way for the 88-year-old veteran to receive the nation’s highest military honor for his actions during the Vietnam War, ending a nearly 60-year wait for the award.

Congratulations to Post 545 member Major James Capers on approval of Medal of Honor. Well deserved sir!!

🚨Today is a proud day for South Carolina and for our entire nation.

The United States Senate has passed my bill, H.R. 3377, authorizing the President to award Major James Capers Jr. the Medal of Honor for his acts of valor while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

In the spring of 1967, while leading a Marine reconnaissance team near Phu Loc, Vietnam, Major Capers and his Marines came under intense enemy fire. During the firefight, he suffered devastating wounds from an exploding gr***de. Despite those injuries, Major Capers refused to quit. Instead, he continued to expose himself to enemy fire to lead his men, direct their movement, and ensure that every Marine possible made it out alive.

That kind of courage is rare. That kind of leadership defines what it means to wear the uniform of the United States Marine Corps.

South Carolina is incredibly proud to call him one of our own, and our nation is grateful for his sacrifice and service. Now the legislation heads to the President’s desk so that Major Capers can finally receive the recognition he has deserved for nearly six decades.

Post 545 Legionnaire Major James Capers is closer to finally receiving recognition as Medal of Honor recipient.

Today marks a long-overdue moment of justice and gratitude.🇺🇸

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed my legislation to advance the Medal of Honor for Major James Capers Jr., a U.S. Marine whose extraordinary heroism in Vietnam has gone unrecognized for far too long. Despite severe wounds and relentless enemy fire, Major Capers continued to lead, protect his Marines, and place their lives above his own.

His actions reflect the very best of our Armed Forces. This vote brings us one step closer to ensuring Major Capers receives our nation’s highest military honor. Freedom is never free, and we must always remember those who paid the price for it.
