Thank you, Betsy Kahn, for sharing your story about 1 day out of your journey as a GAL child advocate. This month is National Social Work Month. Let's do as Betsy says and thank a Social Worker today. They put in many hours to help the children on their caseload. And if you know them like we do, they will put in many hours to do what is right for the children and at times without any thanks.

Thank you to our New Hanover and Pender Social Workers. We appreciate you!

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Erica Allen, who has been a GAL volunteer for 1.5 years.
When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Erica answered, "I chose to become a GAL volunteer because I want to make a difference in a child's life and be the voice that I never had while growing up in the system. Being taken away from your family can be very traumatic so it's very important for a child's voice to be heard and know that they have someone to advocate for them. The voice of a child ALWAYS matters."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Deborah Kearse, who has been a GAL volunteer for 4 years.
When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Deborah answered, "My reason for being a GAL is my passion for kids in need and this is my way to give back to the community. All my life I was the officer and I only saw one side, parents being lock up not thinking about the kids these parents had left behind. When I moved to NC this was my opportunity to give back and protect the ones who couldn't speak for themselves."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Harriet Rogers-Pridgen, who has been a GAL volunteer for 7 years.
When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Harriet answered, "I became a volunteer after reading an article in the Wilmington Star Newspaper about the program. After reading I wanted to know more about helping these children. You can't save every child, but the ones that can be reunited with family and those who may be united with someone else brings joy to your heart. The look on their faces is PRICELESS! I wouldn't trade what I do for anything in this world. It gives me great satisfaction to know that I can give a part of myself and my time to be a help."

Their life may not be peaches & cream, but I like for them to know it can, will, and shall be if I could do anything to make it happen. Children are our future and my time is theirs."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Calisha Ford, who has been a GAL volunteer for 2 years.
When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Calisha answered, "I chose to volunteer with the Guardian Ad Litem Association, because I have a passion for advocacy and for children. I plan on going into the Social Work field, and being a GAL gives me that experience I’ll need. However, since I became a GAL, I’ve noticed the need within my community for GALs. I also noticed that there are a lot of cultural differences that are experienced due to the lack of representation. It’s so important to connect with these kids and it can be a little tough because of a cultural difference. As a GAL that is African American, I realize my presence is needed in order to make connections as well as for these children to see someone who looks like them, extending a helping hand. Being a GAL is hard work and I do not take it lightly. Being able to build those connections takes work and time, but it’s worth it. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I’m able to effectively connect with and advocate for a child. Serving my community in this way, will make lasting impacts on the people I come in contact with. I’m just appreciative and glad that I could be a part of something bigger than myself."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Kim Ceasar who has been a GAL volunteer for 2 years.
When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Kim answered, "Being that I have a non-profit and work in the school system, I see that there are many needs in our society pertaining to the care of children. When I was introduced to the work that GAL does, it was a no brainer. With so many variables, barriers, and issues going on in the world, the children are often times lost in the shuffle. Being a GAL gives me the opportunity to support those that don't always have a voice."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Mia Green, GAL volunteer in District 5 and recently hired as the GAL Volunteer Recruiter for District 4.

When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Mia answered, "Our society commonly favors those with more money, resources, education, etc. I’ve seen the neglect that is shown to people without these privileges, especially kids. I became a Guardian ad Litem because I see myself in them. Being a GAL allows me to take part in bringing light to dark situations. I’m able to provide hope to kids who didn’t know there is a way out. I feel our communities need more GALs and people who stand up for children. Our kids need to know they are not alone."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, let us introduce Anita McMahan, Program Supervisor for Pender and New Hanover Counties.

When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Anita answered, "Some say that the system is broken. Some say that it’s doing what it was designed to do. Regardless, I’ve been given the opportunity to make sure that the children who find themselves caught in the middle of it, have a voice and are provided the appropriate guidance to protect them and help navigate their way. I have always wanted to be able to help others and as a former Social Worker, Special Education Teacher and now as a GAL Supervisor, not only am I privileged do that, but I help train volunteers to do the same. I’ve never liked the spotlight or direct attention. Being in this position affords me the opportunity to make a difference behind the scenes. At the end of it all, knowing that permanency for a child was achieved, makes this a pretty awesome position to be in and an amazing program to be a part of."

As we celebrate Black History Month, we will be honoring our African American GAL staff and volunteers. First up, meet Tim Best, Guardian ad Litem Supervisor for New Hanover County.

Why Did I become a Guardian?

As a black man, my skin color has at times superseded other God given talents that I possess. I had to learn to that my skin color is not a barrier to achievement!

As a Guardian, I have had the opportunity to share what I have learned with young people who have experienced real barriers, such as neglect, homelessness and lack of support, to develop self-advocacy, self-worth and achievement in all their endeavors. Being a Guardian allows me the work with community partners to ensure that children are allotted equal and fair access to goods, services and opportunities that will enhance their life.

Today we acknowledge Carol Morris and Ashley Walton as they celebrate 5 years with the GAL program!

Carol Morris is dedicated, hard working, committed (to her children and the program) are three words we would use to describe her! She has dealt with some extremely challenging situations and never gives up. She has taken some serious abuse cases, large and small sibling groups and is open to any challenge. She has also mentored some new GALs. Thank you, Carol, for volunteering your time to our program.

Ashley Walton continues to work full time while volunteering for the GAL program. She has advocated for 6 children so far. She is a member of the program's recruitment committee and has taken time out of her busy schedule to assist with the GAL Open House in the past. In 2019, she spoke in 2 radio interviews to help recruit new GAL volunteers. She is an asset to the GAL program in more ways than one. Thank you, Ashley, for volunteering your time to our program.

To follow in Carol and Ashley's footsteps and becoming a child advocate, apply today at www.volunteerforgal.org.

Today we celebrate 5 years with Bill Briggs and Katie Maguire.

Bill Briggs has served nearly 30 children. He will often carry multiple cases at a time and doesn’t shy away from advocating strongly for teens and seeks to find the best outcome for all the children for whom he advocates. Thank you, Bill, for continuing to volunteer and advocate for the children in our community.

Katie Maguire is a full time Mom and also works, but finds the time to advocate for the children in our community. She has advocated for 9 children in the last 5 years and doesn't shy away from sibling groups. Thank you, Katie, for all the work you put into your cases and our program.

We appreciate both of you very much!
