Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us this morning! And thank you Ms. LaRue for the shout-out! She’s right- we have been putting in the work and we are seeing results!!!
I was so thrilled to be invited to a Volunteer Appreciation event today at one of our elementary schools. It was so special seeing students help serve and celebrate the volunteers supporting their school community.
Special shout out to Nicolette, Literacy Committee Chair for the Wilmington Rotary Club. While living in Raleigh, she helped start the Together We Read program to support schools working to improve early literacy proficiency. By the time she left, the program had expanded to 55 schools. Bringing this partnership model here to the county and working alongside our educators and early literacy facilitators has been an amazing journey to witness.
As a district, seeing strong middle-of-year literacy growth is a huge win, and it was recently shared during a board meeting that New Hanover County Schools has been recognized for the work being done with instructional coaches and early literacy facilitators.
Alderman Elementary has seen nearly a 30% increase in proficiency, and staff shared that students are feeling more confident heading into End-of-Grade testing season. According to the early literacy facilitator, that progress reflects the hard work of educators, intentional instructional support, and community partnership programs like this one working together.
Smart Schools. Trusted Leadership. Together.
