With 7 acres of public gardens, we offer a place to enjoy nature while learning about the best plant species for our area. The Arboretum is committed to sustainable practices. We do have a RO water bottle filler station and encourage all visitors to bring a refillable bottle.

Next up for our Native Plant Picks: Blue Mist Flower from Shelton Herb Farm!

In the words of Alexandra at Shelton Herb Farm: "We love its graceful blue color and how it pops up along roadsides at about the same time as Goldenrod blooms. It is a wonderful mid-height ground cover for part-sun locations and spreads readily by runners, rhizomes, and seed. We use it to fill in space between taller natives to help with w**d control and add a pop of color in the fall."

A huge thank you to Shelton Herb Farm for supporting this year's festival!

🎟️ Bonus: attend one of our Speaker Nights on September 16, 17, or 18 and you'll get a ticket at the door, entering you to win gift cards to our participating nurseries!

Come support local nurseries and take home native plants for your own pollinator-friendly landscape!

Think spring is the only time to plant? Think again! Fall is actually the BEST season to get new shrubs, trees, and perennials in the ground — cooler air + warm soil = stronger root growth, less transplant stress, and way fewer pests than summer planting. Did the fairies have a party in your lawn last night? A near perfect circle of mushrooms is often called a fairy ring and it is a common occurrence after heavy rains. These types of mushrooms are generally harmless to your turf. The underlying fungus is simply breaking down soil organic matter, so you can either let them naturally disappear or just mow right over them.

Save the date! Join us September 16 from 6:30–8:00 PM at the NHC Arboretum Education Center for "Rooted Against the Rising Tide: How Native Salt Marsh Plants Build a Resilient Coast" with Dr. Lori Sutter, part of the 11th Annual Cape Fear Native Plant Festival.

As sea levels rise, our coastal wetlands depend on their ability to keep pace. Dr. Sutter will dig into the hidden work of Spartina alterniflora below the marsh surface, and how it drives soil building, carbon storage, and long-term marsh persistence.
