Friends of the New Hanover County Library

Friends of the New Hanover County Library The Friends of the Library is a membership group committed to supporting the work of the New Hanover County Library. How can you help?

The organization has no paid staff members but have an active board of directors. We are the only organization in New Hanover County that, through massive volunteer efforts, is able to provide our library with as much as $10,000 a year in funds to augment their government funding, from the proceeds of the book sales and money from members' dues. In this time of government cutbacks, these funds are

more critical than ever. In addition to becoming a member of the organization, we need donations of good, clean, sellable sale merchandise. We need volunteers for the work of the book sales both year round and in the weeks of the book sales, and new Board members to work on our programs, advocacy and the book sales. Anyone interested in becoming a member can pick up a membership application at any branch of the library.

The Friends of the Library book group will meet on Saturday May 16, 10:30, in the Pelican Room at the Pine Valley Library. Our selection is Ariel Lawhon's The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress. Come and discuss this intriguing historical novel, which takes us back to the corruption of New York City's Tammany Hall.

Every program, every resource, every opportunity to learn and connect is stronger because of people who choose to support it.

That’s where we come in.

By becoming a New Hanover County Public Friend of the Library, you help ensure these spaces continue to grow, evolve, and serve for years to come.

📚 Be a Friend. Be part of what makes it all possible.

During National Library Week, we’re taking a moment to say thank you.

To the staff who make the library welcoming.
To the patrons who fill it with life.
And to our fellow Friends who help it thrive.

The library is stronger because of you.

A childhood storytime? Finding a book you couldn’t put down? A quiet place when you needed it most?

There is a reason to celebrate this month!! In the recent minibus bill that was finally passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Trump, libraries and museums received funding that had been threatened all year. The Institute of Museum and Library Services, through which funding passes down to state and local libraries, lives on. Read more about it, and why it's important, in this American Libraries article:

Thanks to the work of advocates, FY2026 appropriations bills signed by President Trump increased federal library funding.

Happy New Year! This will be an exciting year for the New Hanover Friends of the Library because we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary -- fifty years of advocacy and support for our wonderful public library. We will be sending out information on our plans as the year progresses, but we can tell you now they will include both fundraising and fun.

All you book lovers out there, don't miss the COVER TO COVER BOOK SALE this coming Sunday, November 16, at the Main Library. This event is part of the library's Cape Fear Book Festival taking place on November 15 - 16 (https://www.nhcgov.com/2873/Cape-Fear-Book-Festival-Main-Library). Over sixty authors from New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick Counties will be there, signing and selling their books. There will also be art and other literature-related items for sale, and a do-it-yourself gift wrapping table. This is an ideal time to take care of all your loved ones on your Christmas shopping list. If you have not seen our new and beautiful Main Library location, now is your chance.
The NHC Friends of the Library are sponsors of the book festival, so our membership should take note and be proud of what their dues and donations help support.
