Two gyms. Two Wilmington legends. One celebration worth looking back on. 💙

On Friday, family, friends and community members gathered at the MLK Community Center to celebrate William E. “Big Train” Murphy III and Ronald E. "Coach Ron" Davis as the center’s two gymnasiums were officially named in their honor.

It was a morning filled with stories, memories and plenty of appreciation for two coaches and mentors whose impact on Wilmington’s youth extends far beyond the court.

Their names are now part of the MLK Community Center, and their influence will continue to be felt by generations to come.

Today, the City of Wilmington honored two longtime youth coaches and mentors by officially naming the two gyms at the MLK Community Center the William E. Murphy III Gymnasium and Ronald E. Davis Gymnasium.

Known as “Big Train” and “Coach Ron,” Murphy and Davis dedicated their lives to Wilmington’s young people, using sports to teach teamwork, discipline, confidence and the importance of leading by example.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate these two remarkable men, honor their legacies and recognize the lasting impact they made on generations of Wilmington youth.

Their legacy will continue to live on in the community and in the gymnasiums that now bear their names.
