The Maull House in Lewes, Delaware.

“This house is believed to have been built by Samuel Paynter, a carpenter who purchased this property in 1737. Following its completion, the house and surrounding land were sold in 1741 to Luke Shields, a prominent bay and river pilot. The close proximity of the bay and safe harbor of nearby Lewes Creek made this a prime location for those who practiced the competitive piloting profession. This section of Lewes, then some distance from the village, was known as Pilot Town, reflecting the occupation of its residents. The property was purchased by Thomas S. Maull in 1836. The house was expanded with the addition of the present rear wing circa 1890, and it remained in the possession of the Maull family until 1957. It was obtained by the Colonel David Hall Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, in 1962. The Maull House was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.”

NSCDA DE

The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America was formed in 1891 in Philadelphia. Our Delaware society followed in May 1892. We follow the national society aims to collect and preserve manuscripts, traditions, relics, and mementos of the past; and to preserve sites and buildings connected with the early history of our country. In addition, the Society sponsors educational programs promoting everything from colonial history to the way our government functions today; citizenship, and appreciation of love of country through Patriotic Services, scholarships and helping to fund historic projects. One of our past projects was to purchase and donate to the State of Delaware, the John Dickinson Mansion in 1952.

Our headquarters is the Old First Presbyterian Church, known as “the Little Church” which was built in 1740 along Rodney Square in Wilmington, DE. It was moved to it’s current location along the Brandywine River in 1918 where it is used and maintained by NSCDA DE. It is open to the public the 2nd Sunday, April-October from 2-4pm. It may also be rented for meetings, weddings and receptions.
