The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America was formed in 1891 in Philadelphia. Our Delaware society followed in May 1892. We follow the national society aims to collect and preserve manuscripts, traditions, relics, and mementos of the past; and to preserve sites and buildings connected with the early history of our country. In addition, the Society sponsors educational programs promoting everything from colonial history to the way our government functions today; citizenship, and appreciation of love of country through Patriotic Services, scholarships and helping to fund historic projects. One of our past projects was to purchase and donate to the State of Delaware, the John Dickinson Mansion in 1952.
Our headquarters is the Old First Presbyterian Church, known as “the Little Church” which was built in 1740 along Rodney Square in Wilmington, DE. It was moved to it’s current location along the Brandywine River in 1918 where it is used and maintained by NSCDA DE. It is open to the public the 2nd Sunday, April-October from 2-4pm. It may also be rented for meetings, weddings and receptions.
