Beginning Monday, August 31, through Wednesday, September 2, joint teams from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration, and Will County EMA will be in affected areas of Will County assessing damage from the August 11 storm.

These door-to-door assessments help state and federal officials understand the extent of the damage and determine whether Will County may qualify for federal disaster assistance.

Teams will:
✅ Carry official identification
✅ Never ask for money or payment
✅ Conduct exterior assessments only — they will not enter your home

If you see an assessment team in your neighborhood, please feel free to speak with them about the damage your property experienced.

Applications are now being accepted by the City of Wilmington for a School Crossing Guard to help children safely cross on their way to and from school. Applications are available at City Hall or on our website at https://wilmington-il.gov/reports-releases. Applications will be accepted through August 28, 2026.

Hours:
Monday thru Friday (on school days when children are attending)
7:45 AM to 8:15 AM and 2:45 PM to 3:15 PM

Salary: $15.00 per shift or $30.00 per day

All candidates are subject to a background investigation and medical screening, which includes drug screening, prior to hiring.

Our community experienced a devastating storm on Tuesday, August 11, with a confirmed EF-1 tornado and severe winds causing significant damage throughout Wilmington.

In response to the storm and the challenges our community continues to face, Mayor Ben Dietz has issued an Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency for the City of Wilmington. The declaration recognizes the serious impact this storm has had on our residents, businesses, homes, infrastructure, and City operations.

The declaration allows the City to take necessary emergency measures and to seek physical and financial assistance from Will County, the State of Illinois, the federal government, and emergency management agencies.

Wilmington Police Department joins statewide Labor Day Traffic Safety Effort focused on impaired, distracted and unsafe driving
(Wilmington, IL) – The Wilmington Police Department is proud to be one of over 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois participating in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns this Labor Day. From Aug. 14 through the early morning hours of Sept. 8, officers will be out in force, focused on stopping impaired driving, enforcing seat belt laws and reducing other dangerous driving behaviors.

“Driving under the influence — whether it’s alcohol, cannabis or any other impairing drug — is not just risky, it’s illegal,” said Deputy Chief Dole. “We’ll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the people of Wilmington.”
Officers will also be enforcing seat belt laws as part of the “Click It or Ticket” initiative. Buckling up is the most effective way to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. Everyone in the vehicle — front seat or back — should be properly buckled, every trip.
In addition to alcohol, officers will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by cannabis and other drugs. Messages like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” are part of a statewide education and enforcement effort aimed at saving lives.
“We want our community to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and responsibly,” said Deputy Chief Dole. “Plan ahead, use a designated driver, and never get behind the wheel impaired. These decisions save lives.”

This local effort is part of a larger statewide campaign supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation, which administers the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns with federal highway safety funds. The initiative is reinforced by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign running across radio, TV and digital platforms to highlight the deadly consequences of impaired driving.

The Wilmington Police Department conducted a traffic safety campaign throughout the month of July reminding motorists to slow down to save lives. The speed enforcement effort was conducted by Wilmington Police and other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce highway fatalities.

During the campaign, Wilmington Police conducted a total of 172 traffic stops and issued:
• 98 speeding citations
• 3 distracted driving citations
• 1 suspended/revoked/no valid driver’s licenses
• 22 other offense citations

The speed enforcement effort was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
