An ICE detainee wrote a note begging to call his mom. A guard took it. Within an hour, he was found unconscious in his cell.

His name was Brayan Rayo Garzon. He was 27, a Colombian military veteran who had built a life in St. Louis.

ICE took custody of him and sent him 100 miles from his family to the Phelps County Jail in Rolla, Missouri.

Brayan became sick with COVID and was placed in isolation. His request for a mental-health evaluation was rescheduled twice.

ICE also stopped his nightly calls to his mother.

He was desperate to speak with her.

Brayan wrote a handwritten note asking a guard to help him call his mother. He wrote that he knew the guard had a family and that families worry about each other.

A guard collected the note and walked away.

Within an hour, jail staff found Brayan unconscious in his cell. He was flown to a hospital and declared brain dead the next day. An autopsy determined that he died by su***de.

The Associated Press later obtained the note, jail records and surveillance video. The video shows Brayan looking toward the camera on the day he died.

His mother learned that his mental-health appointment had been delayed because of staffing problems.

The last thing Brayan asked for was not complicated.

He wanted to call his mom.
