Hello all! Our mediation and facilitation services have continued through the pandemic, including Teen Court hearings. We have adopted a new format that is a hybrid of sentencing circles practice and what's called a "tribunal model" of teen court proceedings, in which the jury acts similar to a grand jury in its interactions with defendants (we call respondents).

Vantage Pointe has the honor of welcoming a young captain in the Marine Corps who will be volunteering with us in the month of June through the US Special Operation Command's Warrior Care Program - a program intended to support our most elite warriors in their transition from service to civilian life. Derrick Cruz will be joining us mostly to help with our work with teens in the Teen Court programs. He intends to pursue a law degree after leaving the military in order to work with at-risk teens in his hometown of Houston.

Our Story

New Hanover County Teen court is a program run by Vantage Pointe, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides individuals, families, communities, and corporations the tools, training, and support to build or transform relationships.

The program is offered to the community so that young people who make mistakes that result in misdemeanor charges may make amends to their community without having to go through formal court processes.

At the assigned Teen Court Hearing date, the offender will appear before an adult judge and a jury of the offender’s peers. Mandatory sentencing includes jury duty and community service. Other constructive sentencing may include: letters of apology, essays, conflict resolution classes, etc. All Teen Court defendants have up to 90 days to complete sentences. Successful completion of the Teen Court sentence results in DISMISSAL OF CHARGES. All Teen Court participants, both adults and teens, are required to honor the Oath of Confidentiality of all proceedings. Teen Court Benefits: Offenders get a second chance to learn important life lessons about crime and punishment, as well as take personal responsibility for their actions. It can also lead to a greater respect for authority and appreciation of property and rights of others. Student volunteers learn to work together as community members, develop basic leadership skills, and experience the legal process first-hand. Our community sees a reduction in recurring criminal behavior by reaching young offenders at a crucial time. This also allows our court system to focus on more serious offenders.
