Today, New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chair Julia Olson-Boseman shared the following statement regarding the shooting on May 5, 2021 at Long Leaf Park:

"I am saddened and shocked by last night’s shooting that occurred at New Hanover County’s Long Leaf Park. Fortunately, there were no injuries and I appreciate the quick response of our law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating and plans to have more law enforcement presence at the park in the coming days and weeks.

"I know there were many families and children at the park last night for baseball games and to play, and that this was scary and traumatizing for so many of them. I want all of you who were at the park, and our entire community, to know that we will continue to work hard to ensure our parks are safe, and we will work with our law enforcement partners so that an incident like this doesn’t happen again. We have to do more to address gun violence and end this community problem. Long Leaf Park is beloved by so many and our team is committed to keep it safe for everyone."

You are considered "fully vaccinated" two weeks after dose 1⃣ of Johnson & Johnson, or two weeks after dose 2⃣ of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Don't miss your shot to build immunity against COVID-19!

All available vaccines are effective in preventing COVID-19 illness as well as preventing hospitalization and death, but it is essential that anyone receiving a two-dose vaccine go back for their second shot to ensure they are fully vaccinated and have enough protection against the virus.

You need two doses to build up strong immunity.

In December of 2017, New Hanover County joined other city and county governments across North Carolina and the country in a national lawsuit to take action against drug manufacturers and distributors that were fueling the opioid crisis in our communities.

Today, the NCACC and NC Department of Justice and Attorney General's Office announced that North Carolina has developed a Memorandum of Agreement that directs the majority of potential opioid lawsuit settlement funds to local communities who are on the front lines of the opioid epidemic.

The settlements are still under discussion and not complete, but they have the potential to bring hundreds of millions of dollars into North Carolina with New Hanover County directly benefitting. Read #NHCgov Chair Olson-Boseman's full statement on this announcement: bit.ly/3e56c6Z
