Congratulations Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for being confirmed as the 116th Supreme Court Justice.

Today, America celebrates a moment in history that signifies the importance of judicial excellence and racial equity by confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States. Judge Jackson’s qualification, experience, and sound judgment make her an excellent choice for the highest court in the land. She will be a fair and impartial champion for equal justice under the law.

I am also proud that Judge Jackson, as the first Black woman and the first public defender to serve on the highest court in the land, will be an inspiration to young people of all backgrounds that with hard work, dedication to service, and compassion for others, there are no limits to what a person can achieve in our great country.

The Young Democrats of Wilson County has learned about the recent passing of former City Council member A.P. Coleman. Coleman served on the City Council in District 1 for 38 years and retired in 2019.

Our condolences to the Coleman Family on their tremendous loss.

The City of Wilson joins the community in remembering former City Councilmember Avant P. “A.P.” Coleman, one of the longest serving board members, who died Wednesday.

“A.P. Coleman loved Wilson, and he spent most of his adult life in public service,” said City Manager Grant Goings. “He represented us at the state and national levels as well, and always with a big smile and a gregarious nature. We rarely see such levels of life-long commitment to community, and we honor a great man for all he gave to us.”

Councilmember Coleman served for 38 years on the City Council, including 16 years as Mayor Pro Tem.

He was first elected in 1975, only the second African-American to be elected to the City Council. During his years of service, he participated in numerous projects of significance to the development, growth and improvement of the city, including the construction of Buckhorn Reservoir; the establishment of Greenlight, and many other improvements and innovations to the city’s services.

He represented Wilson on numerous statewide boards and associations, including serving as President of the N.C. League of Municipalities in 1991-1992. He was named Wilson’s Distinguished Citizen by the Wilson Chamber of Commerce in 1996.

He resigned from the City Council in May 2019 for health reasons.
