Ya know…they say Winners fish in Wilson… 🎣 🏆 💰! Stop out with some friends and see!!

The Niagara County Center for Economic Development today launched the inaugural Niagara County Corporate Fishing Challenge, a new initiative focused on engaging business professionals, showcasing the region’s world-class fishing opportunities, and supporting a local charitable organization. The challenge is officially underway and will run through Labor Day.

The challenge is open to any business professional fishing in Niagara County this season. To take part, participants will upload their best fishing photos to www.Pollunit.com/polls/ncfish and direct friends, family members, coworkers, and clients to the site to vote for their entries. To vote, people just need to enter their name and email address. Voting will take place through Labor Day.

The winner will receive a trophy and, more importantly, a $1,000 donation will be made in the winner’s name to Catching Dreams Charters, a not-for-profit that provides free fishing adventures for children and young adults battling cancer. Catching Dreams specializes in providing fishing therapy to patients during and after treatment.

“We hope the friendly competition of the fishing challenge underscores the fact that Niagara County, from Lake Ontario to the Niagara River, offers some of the finest fishing opportunities anywhere,” said Captain Frank Campbell, Niagara County Sportfishing and Outdoor Promotions Coordinator. “And in the course of highlight our fishing industry we can raise awareness and support for the great work done by Catching Dreams Charters.”

To help engage the business community, Campbell said local charter captains will be promoting the challenge to those on fishing excursions. Local charter captains have historically hosted a significant number of both local and out-of-town business professionals on fishing charters.

“I want to thank Frank Campbell and all of our charter boat captains for their efforts to promote our area as a destination for great fishing and do so in a fun and unique way,” said Niagara County Legislator Dave Godfrey. “And supporting Catching Dreams Charters as part of the fishing challenge makes it all the more special.”

We’re quickly heading into Memorial Day weekend, and as things begin to ramp up around Wilson, we’re excited to roll out something special: our new We Are Wilson campaign.

This campaign is about celebrating the people, places, and everyday moments that make our village home. It’s about the neighbors who wave from the porch, the families at local events, the volunteers setting up behind the scenes, the businesses keeping our village moving, the churches serving our community, and the organizations that give so much of their time and heart to Wilson.

We have a lot to be thankful for.

So much of what happens here is powered by people who care. Celebrate Wilson continues to bring beautification, music, and community events to life. The Wilson Community Library offers weekly programs that bring people together. The Wilson Area Business Association works to promote and support our local businesses. The Wilson Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary do so much to help keep us safe. The Wilson Conservation Club continues its important efforts, and the Wilson Community Farmers Market has an incredible season planned every Tuesday night.

We also want to thank the churches throughout our village for their involvement, service, and continued support of the Wilson community, and the Lions, they are a meaningful part of the heart of this village.

That’s what We Are Wilson is all about.

It’s a reminder that our community is built by volunteers, neighbors, local businesses, churches, nonprofits, families, and friends who show up, pitch in, and care about this place.

Now we’d love for you to be part of telling that story.

Please click the link below to send in your photos. We’re looking for portraits, candid moments, local businesses, community groups, events, families, friends, kids, pets, and the everyday scenes that show the real heart of Wilson.

Your photos will help us build a community gallery that celebrates who we are, where we’ve been, and what makes this village so special.

We are Wilson.

It’s that time of year where the Wilson calendars start to get busy, it’s just the start too, this summer is going to be big!

Huge thanks to the nonprofits, volunteers, and business owners who are stepping up and making things happen all across our community.

This month, our waterfront businesses are opening, the Central Commercial District is looking lively, and the Woodcock District is doing amazing things too.

We also have returning events and some new fun events coming to the Village that we’re excited to announce in the near future.

From the harbor to downtown to Woodcock, Wilson has a lot to be excited about. Get ready for a huge summer around here, and more importantly, get out and support something.

Grab dinner. Attend an event. Visit a local business. Volunteer. Buy a ticket. Bring a friend. Share a post. Every little bit helps keep this momentum going.

The Wilson Area Business Association Monthly event calendars will also be mailed out soon, so keep your eye out.

Also, thank you to Amber Meyers for the background photo I borrowed. Keep an eye out for her photos on the community pages. They are amazing and do a great job showing off just how beautiful Wilson really is.

Please take the resilience planning survey, and….don’t pet the bear.

Tourism is up in the Village of Wilson… apparently even the bears have heard good things!

There is no need to panic, but please be safe and use common sense:

🐾 Keep an eye on your kids and pets
🐾 Do not feed the bear
🐾 Do not try to pet the bear
🐾 Give it plenty of space

If the situation becomes serious, please contact the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office or call 911 in an emergency.

The DEC will be stocking the lake with fish on May 1st around 12:00 PM.

Prior to stocking, you may hear a few loud “booms”, don’t worry, that’s just air cannons being used to keep the cormorants from turning this into an all you can eat buffet.

Village of Wilson Residents,

Over the last decade, the weather has been testing us. Stronger lake winds. Heavier storms. Long winters. Shoreline flooding. Power outages. Hot spells. We’ve all felt it in one way or another.

That’s why we’re launching a community survey. We’re putting together a practical plan to handle severe weather and protect what matters most. But it only works if it reflects your real experiences and concerns.

The survey asks simple, important questions:
What have you dealt with?
What worries you most?
How prepared do you feel at home?
What solutions make sense to you?

Your feedback will help us:
1. Pinpoint local risks, like shoreline erosion, flooding, and winter maintenance plans.
2. Create a clear, shared vision for how Wilson stays strong and self-reliant.
3. Focus on practical steps, such as better emergency plans, improved drainage, and affordable ways to make homes more storm-ready.
4. Work closely with Niagara County and state partners to address bigger regional challenges.

This isn’t about believing in climate change or not, it’s about smart preparation that saves taxpayer dollars, reduces damage, and helps us recover faster when storms hit. It’s about protecting our homes, our businesses, and the way of life we value.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey on the village website or click the link in our notices. If you have questions, stop by the village office or reach out. I’m always glad to hear from you.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
