A message from our Emegency Management team with this week being hurrican preparedness week.

Its never too early to either create your plan or just go over it. This means looking over amy emergency supplies you may have. Also, if you have equipments such as a generator, go ahead and run it, check fluids on it and make sure its good to go.

I know we were all thankful for the rain we got over the weekend but it was nowhere near what we needed with our drought conditions. We are still under a burn ban. Please be smart and safe.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.

Its as dry as a fast food biscuit outside. Overall everyone has been doing great with not burning. There are other things besides people burning that can start a fire, see below in the post from N.C. Forest Service.

If you pull trailers make sure your chains arent dragging.

If you are a smoker, your ci******es, ci**rs, etc. aren't the only thing you are lighting up. Dry grass and other debris can light off if you throw your butts on the ground. Use proper receptacles.

As always be safe.

Due to dry conditions and lack of rainfall, the state-issued burn ban remains in effect statewide. Outdoor burning is prohibited but isn’t the only ignition source for wildfire, especially in high-risk conditions.

Farm equipment and machine use can also start wildfires. While working outdoors, be mindful of your equipment, and watch for sparks!

Check for and fix fire hazards before operating farm equipment or machines.
👉Remove any buildup of crop residue around the engine, exhaust system, belts and chains.
👉Repair damaged exhaust system components, worn or frayed drive belts, broken or exposed electrical wiring, worn or misaligned moving parts which can indicate a lack of lubricant, and signs of leaking fluids, oil and fuel.
👉For portable, gasoline-powered equipment, make sure you have a properly functioning spark arrester installed.

Good morning!

I know we are thankful we got some rain yesterday but the fire ban is still in effect. See the post we are sharing from N.C. Forest Service

Have a great day and be safe

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Wilson is in the "very high" category. Be very careful and mindful of what you are doing. From yard work, to doing any type of work that creates a spark or if you are pulling a trailer make sure your chains don't drag on the ground.

Increased Risk of Wildfire Due to High to Extreme Fire Danger -- March 25, 2026

What does high fire danger mean for you today?

🎯Fires can start from the smallest spark.
🎯Dry conditions and wind increase fire spread.
🎯Everyday activities carry more risk right now.

Avoid burning, and be cautious with anything that could cause a spark.

How are to road conditions? Sorry folks roads are closed, thats the mindset you need to have unless you have to be on the roads, just stay home.

587 there is no road just ice and snow

58 ice and snow

264 alt, ice and snow

Those are the roads we saw responding to calls. All other ones are just as bad. Enjoy the time at home but please just stay off the roads.

Put your keys down and just stay inside. Yes its pretty outside, no you don't need to be on the road
People wreck enough when its clear outside. The roads have not been plowed yet and that means the major ones, DOT crews are working as fast as they can, stay out of their way.

Dangerous Travel Conditions This Morning, Followed by Dangerously Cold and Renewed Hazardous Travel Tonight.

01/26/2026

Good evening everyone. We hope everyone is staying warm and safe. We know people still have to go to work and we just want to bring up a few reminders:

1. Bridges are still icy

2. Roads that may have been cleared before may have some covering on them that wasn't there earlier today.

3. Still keep a good amount of distance between you and vehicles you may be following. You need greater distance to slow down or avoid collision.

4. Just because your windshield is clear doesn't mean the whole vehicle is. Sheets of ice that are on top of your car, back window, beds of pickup trucks, 18 wheeler trailers can fall of and hit cars behind them.

5. Longer travel time. With the road conditions and other drivers please account for this time while you are traveling. If you are trying to beat the clock, rather be late than not show up at all due to getting in an accident.

As always stay safe!

Good afternoon everyone! Hope everyone is staying warm. Please see below for latest update from Wilson County Government.

Please don't go "hey let's see what its like around here", it looks like what you are seeing out your windows. Roads are bad, just because it may be "slush" where you are at we are seeing reports of straight ice on roads. Let DOT do their thing and just stay home and be safe.

As always be safe and stay warm.
