On Friday, October 16, hundreds of volunteers will build a safe, interactive playground for LGBT families, local children and our allies on the campus of The Pride Center at Equality Park. A playground is more than a playground. It's a brain-expander, a friend-maker, a mentor-connector and a muscle-builder. Physical play helps children live healthier lives and develop the ability to overcome chall
enges and adversity. LGBT families consistently tell us they are looking for safe, welcoming spaces where they can bring their families for social support, healthy recreation, mentoring and connection. At this playground, children of LGBT parents will be able to meet other families just like theirs and feel they are embraced and loved. LGBT parents will network to support each other, make play dates, exchange resources and share parenting advice. Families will know they are supported and strengthened in our community. I am asking you to help make this possible. We are partnered with JetBlue and KaBOOM! in this endeavor. The community build process calls on our entire community to raise funds, recruit volunteers, gather supplies and construct the playground. This will unite our community in a common goal, forging connections between youth and adults, businesses and families. JetBlue is generously donating the majority of funds and significant volunteer support to make this project possible. JetBlue's support has inspired our community to make this project top notch. Therefore, in addition to raising the required funds for site preparation, The Pride Center has embraced the challenge to raise $75,000. This will not only allow the community to prepare for Build Day, but enhance the site with a permanent fence, lighting, a water fountain as well as ensure funds for playground maintenance down the road. I am asking you to do three things:
1. Donate a generous financial gift right now to build the playground. You can donate via credit card at www.PrideCenterFlorida.org. Click on the “Donate Now” button and follow the “Playground Build Project” link; please include "Playground" in the comment section. Or you can pay by check to The Pride Center and put "Playground" in the memo line.
2. Send this to a family member, friend or business colleague who may be interested and make a personal request for them to help. Success will depend on us spreading the word far and fast.
3. Join us for the actual build week. We seek 200 volunteer on Friday, October 16 for Build Day. We're recruiting 30 able-bodied volunteers for Prep Days on Wednesday and Thursday, October 14 and 15. If you'd like to volunteer, please register here: http://www.tfaforms.com/384218. Thank you for supporting the children and families of our community!
