Wilton Fire units were dispatched to a possible roof top HVAC unit fire this morning on Danbury Rd. Crews utilized Truck 5 to gain access to the roof and verified there was no fire, just a unit malfunction.

When will they realize that the current staffing levels of the Wilton Fire Department are well below the national standard for a response to a building of this size? That should be part of the conversation.

The National Fire Protection Association states that a response to a fire in this structure would require a minimum of 27 firefighters within 10 min. We currently have 6-7 per shift covering the entire Town of Wilton, depending on the day.

This project alone is now adding 393 new apartments to Wilton center. One of the 4 new buildings the P&Z commission is calling “massive”.

If firefighter staffing does not continue to increase as the infrastructure expands, the unsafe situation created for both the residents and firefighters is simply negligence of the Town administrators!

As Wilton continues to fight for staffing increases, this is a great representation of what’s needed and how fast. National standards call for 4 firefighters on each engine. We currently are below that standard.

The results are clear: relying on off-duty to respond from home causes critical delays when seconds matter most.

Two cannot safely fight a structure fire alone. That’s why international standards call for at least four fire fighters on every engine company – and why the IAFF is fighting for across North America.

Wilton Firefighters Local 2233 have been without a contract for over a year!! Our members serve and protect the community, putting others first. We’re asking for a fair contract giving members and their families better wages, healthcare and benefits, especially as the cost of living continues to increase exponentially.

We also have not had a pension contract in over 8 years!!!! Our retired members also deserve better wages, healthcare and benefits in retirement.

Our hopes are that the Town of Wilton will settle these contracts very soon.

If they want to keep building like this, we need to continue to increase firefighter staffing in Wilton.
Even after adding 1 additional firefighter per shift, we are still grossly understaffed for the new construction happening in Town.
