Memorial day after action report:
A couple of VFW members and I went to Fitzwilliam to help with their parade.
It rained.
We got wet.
REALLY wet.
other than that it was a success. I got to see an old friend (Hey, Brooke!)
In total we visited 4 memorials and gave our rifle salute at each.

Then we came back to Wi******er.
The parade that was planned was called off on account of weather.

But by the time we got back down here the rain had cleared out so it wasn't so bad.
We did the VFW ceremony downtown. It was sparsely attended, i had hoped more.
The Wi******er Fire Department showed up in their dress uniforms and that really made the day.

The cook out at the pavilion had a good attendance. The Auxiliary really shined!

I met some new people and networked with the FD for our next event.

All in all, it was a success despite the weather.

Wi******er VFW Memorial Day Schedule of Events.

Hello everyone,
Remember Memorial Day is THIS Monday, the 25th.
Here is the schedule as I have it planned.

Monday morning 07:00 we will transit to Fitzwilliam Inn to muster behind the Inn like we always do. I expect some other members to meet us there at 07:30 or 07:45. Wear your VFW covers and uniforms if you wish to represent your branch, otherwise, white shirt/black pants.

Their parade steps off at 08:00.

We march around the Common and fall in as usual. They say some words, we fire the guns, then on to the next event down the road. I am not sure in which order we will do it but there are 3 events after the one on the Common; Fitzwilliam Depot memorial, Rhododendron Cemetery, Pine Grove cemetery.

After their 4 events we go back to the Wi******er Post to re-group.

Everyone else meet in Wi******er 09:30 or 09:45.

NO LATER THAN 10:00AM!

We will provide the Color Guard, Rifle Detail, Wreathes, and bugler. I would like to make a good impression so the more members we have in formation the better, so tell everyone, and their brothers to show up!

Our parade begins at 10:30.

We will be provided transportation from the Post to the Wi******er Memorial in the center of town along with the main body of the parade group.
We will fall in as usual, by the flags, and the main Memorial.
We say some words, place the wreathes, shoot the guns, "blow" taps and get back on the bus.
We will then transit to the Evergreen Cemetery on the bus. The rest of the community will walk with us up Parker street.

Once we arrive at the Cemetery, we fall in and wait for everyone else to get in order. We say our closing prayers, place one last wreathe, and shoot the guns one last time. After taps we will fall out. We get BACK on the bus and transit back to the VFW Post.

We will have a moment to catch our breath before the BBQ starts out back at the Pavillion.
The Auxiliary will be cooking by then. The bar out back will open at noon. Cash only- no free drinks this time, sorry.

We will request a 5 dollar per person donation at the gate for hamburgs/hotdogs/etc and distribute poppies at that time. If a member of the community, or family, doesn't have 5 dollars- we won't turn them away. (but please be mindful of helping out the effort)

Everyone eats and drinks, tells "Sea Stories" and we call it a day. The bar closes about 6:00PM (depending on the crowd and the staff)

This is the schedule as I expect it to happen. Of course, there are a lot of people involved so we will remain flexible with regards to ex*****on.

Sorry for the late notice but i wanted to remind everyone that the VFW Post 3968 will be having a meat raffle Saturday, May 16 at 6:30pm. It will be open to the public therefore it will be a non-smoking event. the format will be a "bar bingo" format.
The bundles are from the Polish Butcher here in Wi******er so they should be good. (I don't have the list but i can guarantee it will be awesome!)
Come on down and enjoy good company and good fun.

Poppy Drive Update.

I wanted to give everyone who helped a huge THANKS!!!
I also wanted to thank the community. The response was remarkable (so great as to be remarked upon).

Us fools, VFW and Aux alike, stood out there in the rain for three hours and our efforts paid off. We all got wet but collected a lot of wet money. I think the cash is still damp! (i may be).
For us it is NOT about the money, rather it is a tool for us to do the most good for our members/auxiliary/families.

One short story about "Poppies". The whole thing started after WW1 when the little poppy plants started growing on the old battle fields. People saw it as a healing thing. Today we use the poppies to remember our fallen.

Remembrance and new growth.

The "Poppy Drive" went well today.

As Commander I am proud of everyone who stood out in the middle of the road in the rain. One could not ask for a better team.
We all got soaked but it was great to talk to people of the community, and some others just passing through.
It was a real positive energy.

Second Notice going out to VFW Members and families and friends of VFW Members.
Post 3968 Officer elections are in just three (whoops, two) weeks. We will be having nominations and elections at our regular April meeting, which falls on April 8th this year.
All members are invited and can declare their candidacy. Although I would ask for a letter of intention soon if you're going to declare.
We are in need of candidates for Commander, Senior Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander ( #1,2, and 3 in the hierarchy), and quartermaster, and trustees.
The NON-SMOKING meeting kicks off at 7:00PM. Come on down and join the fun.
See you there.
Best regards,
Bill Russell
Commander

Hello everybody! Especially VFW members.
Nominations are now open for Officers at VFW for the next fiscal year. Nominations open in March, elections are held in April, but their term doesn't really start until June.
Officers include Commander, Senior Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Quartermaster, Trustees.
All members in good standing can nominate someone, or declare their own candidacy (you'll still need a second but hey, that's just business).
All members in good standing are voting members so come on down and let your voice be heard!

Thank you everybody who came out to our massive fundraiser on Jan 31.

i am fielding questions about 'How did it go?", "are we going to open soon?"

But mostly about, "Why did you close the day after the fundraiser?"

The answers in order;
It went well. Better than anyone could have expected. The VFW community raised over $6k. So we paid some bills and continue to pay more. (it's a never-ending struggle)
We closed the day after because that's when our liquor license expired. The state of NH controls that- not us.

finally, "will we reopen soon?". We are trying. There are a couple of issues to work out just yet, but i have a positive outlook that we should be open for business soon.
But please be reminded that when we reopen we will need more support from the community or we will end up in the same sad place.
