Four KBA Board members worked through the pouring rain this morning and spent about 3 hours trying to clear the walking trail from Rose Hill Park, where the infantry fighting took place during the 1st Battle of Kernstown, to Sandy Ridge. The trail roughly follows the retreat of the Confederates. Pictured from left to right are Chuck Maurer, Bru Randall, and Andy Marrocco. Not pictured is Steve Chesley. They hope to have the trail cleared in the next couple of weeks. Everyone was completely soaked but satisfied.

This past Saturday, the National Park Service gave an excellent presentation on the 1862 Valley Campaign. As you can see, the presentation was moved indoors to the Kernstown Artillery Museum due to rain. In spite of the weather there was a good turnout and everyone enjoyed the presentation. Keep checking our website at www.kernstownbattle.org for more upcoming events.

The Kernstown Battlefield Association does much more than give great tours of our Civil War battlefield and 1854 Pritchard House. We have also partnered with the local American Audubon Society as part of a conservation effort to bring back the American Kestrel, providing habitat and monitoring their progress. Here we have a Kestrel incubating 5 eggs in one of the boxes and in another one there are 5 chicks.

Had a great Park Day with a lot of great volunteers who worked to clean up the Kernstown Battlefield before the rain arrived. We also had the added treat of having the 2nd Maryland Confederate Living History group there. A special thank you to all the great volunteers and to KBA Board member Larry Turner for organizing this years Park Day.

The Kernstown Battlefield has a new and authentic artifact displayed in their museum. This live round has been identified as a 2.9 inch Parrot rifle shell with a wrought iron sabot and first pattern Parrott percussion fuse. It was plowed up on the Kernstown Battlefield property in the early 1970's by the farmer who used to own the land. To render the shell safe, the iron body was breached using an underwater drilling system to flush the shell of powder. This shell was fired from the Union position on Pritchard's Hill during the 1st Battle of Kernstown. Come visit our museum, which is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10am - 4pm to see this new artifact.
