Handley alumni — we need your help to spread the word! ❤️🖤

The Wi******er Education Foundation is working to bring new life to the Patsy Cline Theater at John Handley High School through our Community Comfort Campaign to replace the theater’s aging seats and carpeting.

For generations, this theater has been more than a school auditorium — it has been the stage for performances, ceremonies, community events, Apple Blossom traditions, and memories shared across generations of Judges.

On May 6, 1978, Dolly Parton performed on the steps of Handley High School in Wi******er, Virginia. Many young people who could not attend remembered sitting on porches along Washington and Jefferson Streets, hearing her voice as clear as day. Imagine relaxing in a lawn chair in your own yard while a live Dolly Parton concert drifted through Wi******er. What a night that must have been.

Dolly died today at the age of 80. Through her music, movies, humor, and generosity, she gave us a lifetime of entertainment and became part of our childhoods. She seemed as though she would be here forever. Today, another incredible light from our childhood has gone out—but in Wi******er, we will always remember when her voice floated beyond the Handley steps.

🎓 Celebrating Our 2026–2027 Mindy J. Loy “Come Back to Teach” Grant Recipients!

We are proud to announce the four outstanding Wi******er Public Schools educators receiving this year’s Mindy J. Loy “Come Back to Teach” Education Grants!

These $5,000 grants are made possible through the generosity of the Mindy J. Loy Trust, established in memory of Mindy J. Loy, a proud member of the John Handley High School Class of 1974.

The grants provide financial assistance to Handley graduates who have chosen to return to their community as educators, administrators, or other certificated professionals in Wi******er Public Schools.

⭐ Jennifer O’Connell — ESOL Teacher, Daniel Morgan Middle School
⭐ Fenton Todd, Jr. — Special Education Teacher, Daniel Morgan Middle School

Since the program began in 2018–2019, the Wi******er Education Foundation has awarded more than $175,000 through the Come Back to Teach program.

There is something especially meaningful about Handley graduates coming home to teach the next generation. We are grateful to Mindy Loy and her family for helping make that possible.
