Winchester Conservation Commission

Winchester Conservation Commission The mission of the WCC is to preserve and protect the towns' natural resources and natural treasures.

We act as a conservation advisory commission to other town boards, and work to educate residents of Wi******er about our environment and the importance of land and water resources. We work to preserve agricultural lands, and protect wetlands. We may not own property but may acquire, in the name of the town, properties that are important to Wi******er, in accordance with the Master Plan, to maintain the rural character of the town and protect its natural resources.

When a crow feels sick… it visits an anthill.
Sounds strange? It’s actually one of nature’s most fascinating healing rituals.
When a crow senses it’s unwell, it will intentionally find an anthill, spread its wings wide, and remain completely still—waiting for the ants to crawl into its feathers.
Why?
Because ants release formic acid—a natural antiseptic that kills bacteria, fungi, and parasites hiding in the bird’s feathers.
This behavior is called “anting”, and it’s been observed not just in crows, but in many bird species.
No medicine.
No vet.
Just pure instinct and nature’s built-in pharmacy.
A brilliant reminder that the natural world is full of intelligent, self-healing systems…
We just need to stop and notice.

First of all…I’m a delight.

Secondly, still a delight.

Opossums—commonly referred to as possums—are found throughout the eastern United States as well as parts of the West Coast. These marsupials are most commonly known for their ability to “play dead” and for their prehensile tails (used for hanging from tree branches when young)! They actually have no control over when they play dead. When they are under stress their body automatically seizes up to resemble a co**se and excretes a foul odor to deter predators. (Same. Usually on Mondays.) The ultimate goal is to convince a predator that the opossum is not worth attacking or sending yet another Teams meeting invite.
