โ„๏ธ Cold Temperatures & Snowstorm Ahead โ€” Be Prepared! โ„๏ธ

A stretch of extreme cold temperatures and winter weather is headed our way. Snow, ice, and dangerous wind chills can make travel difficult and increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

๐ŸงŠ Remember: Frostbite can occur in as little as minutes when temperatures drop, especially with wind.

โœ… How to Prepare:
* Dress in layers โ€” hat, gloves, scarf, and waterproof boots
* Limit time outdoors and take frequent warm-up breaks
* Prepare an emergency kit (flashlight, food, water, blankets, medications)
* Winterize your vehicle โ€” check tires, battery, fuel, and windshield fluid

Stay informed by monitoring weather alerts and road conditions

Your safety matters. Taking a few steps now can make a big difference during severe winter weather.

Did you know? In March 2025, the residents voted to raise the cap on the ambulance billing revenue account from a previous $250,000? Why?? Because there is more than $250,000 in the account.

We employ our town residents to ask the BOS why those funds cannot be used to financially change the current model of the ambulance. $1/hr to be on call nights and weekends doesnโ€™t bring in additional staff from out of town. It doesnโ€™t fairly compensate the few of us in town that are consistently scheduled to cover nights and weekends on top of our FT jobs and family lives. Cover more calls = increased revenue back into the account!

With Medicare set to pay services 325% reimbursements for ambulance transports starting in January 2026, NOW is the time to take action! The ambulance service can capitalize on the increase in reimbursement money to increase pay and staffing and also create funds to help sustain the changes!!

This was NOT the information that was conveyed to our staff last week. Turns out the BOS have been in talks since AUGUST. For the sake of โ€œtransparencyโ€, this is all a surprise. They approached CCEMS without any efforts to attempt a new model or an increase in pay to a liveable wage or competitive to area EMS agencies. Thereโ€™s absolutely a logical and fiscally responsible way to keep this town run service but we werenโ€™t even given that opportunity!!

Wi******er officials are considering doing away with the town's ambulance service.

With 8 active EMS providers for most of the year ( 4 that live in town) here is the call coverage breakdown 2025 YTD 702 calls
Wi******er Ambulance: 49.57%
Cheshire County EMS: 48.01%
Northfield EMS: 2.42%

As you may be aware, the Board of Selectmen recently shared the news that they are initiating discussions with Cheshire County EMS to become the primary ambulance service for our town.

As you might have noticed, it is no secret that our ambulance has faced challenges in terms of staffing and responding to emergencies, but we are eager to turn this around. This is largely due to the dedication of our team, who have persevered despite the lack of staffing, pay disparities compared to area EMS services, and a model that has not kept pace with our growing needs.

The current model, adopted in 2019, has remained unchanged, but we are now poised for transformation. Currently, our staff is paid hourly Monday through Friday from 6am to 6pm to staff at the station, with hourly paid positions ranging from $18 to $22 per hour, depending on level and years of service to the town. After 6pm during the week and all weekend hours, staff is paid $1 per hour to be on call from home or to be at the station if they do not live in town. For every call answered during those hours, each crew member is paid a flat rate, ranging from $25 to $45, depending on the level of care required and tranports vs. non-transports.

We urge you to join us in embracing this opportunity for change and growth. We have a talented and committed group of providers who have consistently shown up to serve our community when able to and we are eager to build on their dedication. Wi******er's diverse population has allowed our providers to gain invaluable experience in responding to a wide range of emergencies, making them exceptional providers.

We are passionate about continuing to serve our community, and we believe that with your support, we can create a brighter future for our ambulance service. We invite you to join us in shaping this future and ensuring that our community receives the best possible care.
