She’ll be out at Wi******er Brew Works (320 N Cameron Street) TONIGHT from 5-7 and then TOMORROW she’ll have a popup tent at her farm on 360 Babbs Mountain Rd from 4-6PM. Do you live in the Gainesboro area? Do you want to see more representation for our area on the county’s Board of Supervisors?
If we haven’t met before, my name is Becky Rager and I’ve decided to throw my hat into the ring for our local Board of Supervisors.
Now that the real work is out of the way, here’s an introduction of myself. I’m a working mom of three who lives on our small family farm in the beautiful Gainesboro District of Frederick County.
My background? I grew up on the Outer Banks of NC before attending Virginia Tech. I was raised by a single mom with the support of my grandparents. My grandfather was a retired Baltimore City police officer turned book keeper for a small local cabinet shop, my grandmother worked at a local discount bakery and my mother was a state employee with the ABC board. All three worked to help me through school, first for high school at the North Carolina School for the Arts and then on to college at Virginia Tech.
I was the first in my family to attend college and at Virginia Tech, where I studied English and Political Science, I grew an appreciation for the natural beauty this state has to offer. It’s where I also developed a love for the local farms that surrounded the campus. I found myself enamored with the slow country living and beautiful mountain views that the area had to offer.
During my time at Tech, I hopped into the horse world, purchased my very first horse, Larkin, and worked for a small horse farm close to the university, with additional jobs a the campus bookstore and as a tutor to local school children, to pay for her board. I was young, following a dream, and hustling to make it happen. She followed me back to NC after graduation, then on to SC where I settled down to raise my children, but my experiences with her solidified where I wanted to be, and I always missed Virginia!
Skip ahead to 2020 and my dream of coming back to Virginia was realized when we relocated for my partner’s job. I love this area through and through.
Lately, watching the county come together over common causes, like concerns about data centers and our natural resources, has left me wanting to see more of that.
That’s why I want to serve as the Gainesboro representative on the Board of Supervisors. I do not want to see our beautiful farmlands turned into an industrial hot spot. Instead, I would love to see our local small farms and businesses flourish, protect our older and more established farms and land from data center or other industrial development, and support local tourism that supports the beauty of our region.
I also want to hear from you! I don’t want to represent from just behind the dais. I want the help of my neighbors throughout Gainesboro to help me craft the policies and protections that will shape our county not only for ourselves and our enjoyment, but for our children and generations to come. Will you join me?
