Shawneeland Through The Ages

Shawneeland Through The Ages Shawneeland was established in 1956 as a private recreational community for people in the metro areas of Washington, Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland.

It opened the weekend of July 14 and 15, 1956. Created by Olney Md Builder-developer Don R Lamborne, Shawneeland once consisted of 9000 acres spread across the Great North Mountain and it's valleys. Mr Lamborne was noted as the builder-developer of the award winning subdivision Williamsburg Village in Olney, Md. He sold the subdivision in 1956 to fund the acquisition of the first 8000 plus acres

that would become Shawneeland. (The Lodge area and mountain) We're seeking copies of old photos, brochures or any memoribilia to archive for future generations who may have a connection with Shaweneeland. We hope you'll also share with us your memories of visits, the ski area, stables, Tecumseh Lodge or anything that comes to mind about the "good ole days!" Shawneeland was twelve miles long, stretching almost from Rt 50 on the NE to Rt 55 on the SW. If you'd like larger sized images from these pages, please send an email to page Administrator Roger Lamborne at [email protected]. www.topofvirginia.com

Top of the mountain view by Timothy Stockdale's drone Jan 18, 2024 including Fire Tower. Thomas Rosenberger Sr, father of Tom Rosenberger, was part of the team that built the tower pre 1955. He was the area Virginia Forrestor for the Forwst Utilities service in the early '50's. Once owned by the Virginia Forest Service, it was one of dozens of similar towers manned by fire spotters. The tower was last used circa the 1960-1970's by Leafa Whetzel, wife of Shawneeland Project Manager Charlie Whetzel. It is on private property and is NOT accessible by the public.

We had perfect weather on Sat June 3 for the Clowser Foundation's annual Memorial Service commerating the history of the Clowser family. The service at the Clowser Family Cemetery adjacent tto the historic Clowser house.
There was a special rememberance for Marion Clowser who recently passed away. The Honor Guard for the days service provided by The George Mercer Company, Virginia Regiment. Marion worked at Shawneeland from about 1957 to 1985....the longest employed person in Shawneeland's history. He was a motor grader amd bull dozer operator during most of his tenure and cleared almost 50 miles of Shawneeland roads over the years....in addition, he bulldozed and cleared the road to the top of the mountain that became Wolf Spring Trail.
Marion was one of the last 2 Clowser decendants to have been born in the Clowser House. The other is his sister Peggy Clowser Partlow. The present Clowser House was believed to have been built in the latter part of the 1700's to replace the original Klauser/Clowser log home sited just uphill from the spring.
This property was first settled by the Johann Heinrich Klauser family about 1760. They imigrated from Germany, settled near Philadelphia, PA and the migrated across Pennsylvania and down the old Wagon Road---present day Rt 11. His original land grant stretched northward along the old Shawnee Trail. The adjacent grant on the south side was Jacob Keckley's (Kackley) land where Tecumseh Lodge was located and Lake Cherokee. The Keckley house was torn down by Frederick County after Shawneeland became a Sanitary District. Thank you to our Clowser Foundation President Larry Allen Clowser Webb for the photos.
The Clowser Foundation Board of Directors consists of Larry Allen Clowser Webb, Debbie Clowser Martin, Kim Midtgard., Belinda Pugh, Haley Lofthouse, Roger Lamborne, George Sobien, Margaret Clark and Robert Stieg.
