DHS announces Mobile Registration Intake Centers to support disaster victims

INDIANAPOLIS -- Beginning Friday, Aug. 28, Indiana disaster survivors will be able to meet directly with state, county and FEMA teams at multiple Mobile Registration Intake Centers (MRICs). Representatives at these centers will provide in-person assistance, answer questions and help homeowners and renters apply for FEMA’s Individual Assistance program.

Survivors should file an insurance claim first. Individuals with homeowners, renters or flood insurance should file a claim before applying for FEMA assistance. FEMA does not duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. If a policy does not cover all disaster-related expenses, survivors may still be eligible for federal support.
Homeowners and renters in Carroll, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Porter, Pulaski, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, Union and Wayne counties who sustained uninsured damage or losses due to the August storms, tornadoes and flooding may now apply for FEMA disaster assistance.

Individuals who have already applied for State Disaster Relief Funds must also submit an application for FEMA disaster assistance to be considered for federal support.

Available MRIC locations:

Each location will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Lake County, which will close at 4:30 p.m. A Randolph County site has been identified, and its dates will be announced later. Additional dates, times, and locations will be announced as services become available.

The fastest way to apply is online at DisasterAssistance.gov or the Spanish language DisasterAssistance.gov/es.

For more information or additional assistance, individuals may contact the FEMA Helpline (1-800-621-3362), which provides support in multiple languages.

Those who use a relay service, captioned telephone, or other assisted communication should provide FEMA with the number associated with that service. An accessible video explaining how to apply is available at “What You Need to Know Before Applying for FEMA Assistance.”

Applicants should remain alert for potential fraud. FEMA representatives will never request payment to complete an application. Hoosiers should only use disasterassistance.gov, the helpline, or visit a Mobile Registration Intake Center (MRIC) to submit an application. Suspected fraud can be reported to [email protected].

Media outlets are prohibited from filming at MRIC locations without prior permission to protect the privacy and personal information of disaster survivors. Media availability will be offered at a later date.

Resource hub now available for August severe weather and flooding

The state's August Disaster Resource Hub is now available: on.in.gov/August2026Disaster. The hub serves as a comprehensive resource center for individuals seeking state and federal assistance and updates related to the severe weather events that began on Aug. 11.

The hub also includes the application for the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF), specifically for the Aug. 11 events and the ongoing impacts. Impacted Hoosiers may qualify for emergency aid grants of up to $5,000. This fund is designed to help families secure essential items like clothing and uninsured medical devices while they are displaced from their homes.

Gov. Braun opens more resources for Hoosiers
• Temporary house grants through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority
o The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority is providing temporary housing grants to help eligible displaced Hoosiers transition from emergency shelters into hotels, apartments and other temporary accommodations. Hoosiers in need of temporary housing can find more information at IN211.communityos.org or by calling 211. Additionally, Hoosiers can find American Red Cross shelters in impacted areas here.
• Emergency SNAP benefit replacements
o Gov. Braun activated emergency SNAP benefit replacements for eligible SNAP recipients who lost food due to the storm or power outages. Affected Hoosiers will need to submit an affidavit for replacement benefits. The affidavit must be submitted within 10 days of the event and the loss (due to power outage, flood, etc.) must be verified. The document may be uploaded to the FSSA Benefits Portal , faxed to 888-436-9199 or dropped off at any Division of Family Resources’ office.
• Need help understanding insurance coverage?
o The Indiana Department of Insurance is working with the Office of the Attorney General to help Hoosiers understand insurance coverage, determine next steps for uninsured losses and protect themselves from disaster-related scams. Consumer complaints can be filed with the Attorney General's Office at indianaconsumer.com.

The travel restrictions for Randolph County have been lifted. There are no restrictions. Drivers need to use caution when traveling, as several roads have water crossing them.

The Heart of Indiana United Way has established a long-term flood recovery fund for families across Delaware, Fayette, Henry, Madison, and Randolph counties to help them recover and rebuild. If people wish to donate, they can do so at this link: http://www.heartofindianaunitedway.org/floodrecovery. The Heart of Indiana is also handling online volunteer registration. Lastly, persons or organizations with damage that needs to be reported can report their damage at in211.org. Those without internet access can dial 2-1-1 or 866-211-9966 (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm), and we will assist.

This post was written by Kenon Gray from Henry County, IN. This post explains the flood recovery process. Keep in mind that it's still raining, roads still have water across them, rescues from water are still happening, and local homes and businesses may still be flooded. Assessments will not occur until it's safe to do so.

The recovery work continues in earnest. The federal gov’t has cleared disaster assistance for Indiana after Governor Braun made an emergency declaration.

At the local level, the Indiana Dept. of Homeland Security, IDHS, has requirements for documenting & securing disaster funds (attached) that has township trustees and cities reporting to their county emergency mgt. agency, EMA, that collects countywide data to then report to IDHS.

Each county like Delaware, Fayette, Henry, Rush, Madison, Randolph, Wayne, etc. will do similarly. The county’s EMA reports to the state.

This is the process required by the IDHS Public Assistance (PA) pgm. that helps state, local gov’t, and private nonprofits. Via this PA Program, FEMA provides supplemental federal disaster grant assistance to include debris removal, emergency protective measures and repair, replacement or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned/eligible private nonprofit facilities.

Many other agencies, businesses, churches and volunteers are simultaneously assisting so many needing help. Please be patient, resilient, thankful for life, while encouraging others & documenting everything through pictures, notes and keeping receipts.

Do you know any family or friends whose homes have been damaged by the flooding that began on August 11th and continues? Make sure they see this photo. As of this post, 16 families have reported flood damage on 211. We believe that there are far more homes damaged. We use the data from 211 to know which homes to go inspect, share, and repost.
