Paws up to everyone who continues to donate aluminum cans & to UCI Street Dept for transporting them to the recycling center. The latest run netted us $424!

Got cans? You can drop them off in the designated area at the end of S. Howard St. at the Union City, Indiana, Street Department. Please look for the signs. PAWS accepts aluminum cans 24/7, 365 days of the year.

Please do not deposit plastic, glass, paper, etc. in the container designated for cans. We ask that they be in tied garbage bags or other heavy plastic bags for easy transporting. Special thanks to all who continue to support this ongoing fundraiser.

Invasive Plant of the Week: Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin)

Don’t let the soft, pink, powderpuff blooms fool you...mimosa is an aggressive invader that spreads quickly and causes real harm to our ecosystems. It produces abundant seeds that are easily dispersed by water and wildlife, allowing it to rapidly colonize roadsides, streambanks, forest edges, and disturbed areas. Once established, it forms dense thickets that crowd out native plants, reducing the diversity of species that wildlife depend on for food and habitat.

Mimosa also alters soil conditions through nitrogen fixation, giving it a competitive advantage over native species adapted to lower-nutrient soils. Its fast growth and dense canopy shade out native seedlings, preventing forests from regenerating naturally.

Help protect our natural areas by avoiding planting mimosa and removing it when possible. Learn how to identify and manage invasive species like this one: sicim.info

From beautiful flower planters and fresh greenery to neighbors stepping up through initiatives like Throw Away Thursdays, it’s amazing to see our downtown shining brighter every day. 💙

These little touches make a BIG difference — creating a welcoming, vibrant space for residents, visitors, shoppers, and businesses alike. A huge thank you to everyone helping keep Wi******er beautiful through planting flowers, picking up litter, supporting local businesses, and taking pride in our community.
