Big moves on two wheels!

Our students have officially kicked off our new cycling unit thanks to the amazing bikes we received through Outride! We spent our first few days building crucial safety habits from the ground up.

Before anyone took off, every student learned how to:
-Properly fit their helmets for maximum safety.
-Adjust their bikes for a safe, comfortable fit.
-Run a pre-ride safety check to make sure every bike was ready to roll.

Once the safety checks were done, students mastered the Power Pedal position to gain balance and confidence before riding on their own! Everyone is moving at their own pace, and the atmosphere has been incredible. So many breakthrough moments, high fives, and students cheering each other on every step of the way.

We even had an extra-special guest join the fun! Our Superintendent, Dr. Jason Van Heukelum, couldn't resist joining in. He hopped on a bike and came speeding around the track with his arms stretched wide!

BIKE BUILD DAY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

In just 3 hours, our amazing community came together to assemble 24 bicycles for our students! We are overwhelmed by the incredible support from the families, students, and staff who spent their Saturday turning wrenches and making this vision a reality.

Special Shoutouts & Thank Yous:

Our Dedicated Staff: A big thank you to Mrs. Wheeling, Mr. Young, and Mr. Cote for showing up and getting their hands dirty!

Baker Dentistry: Thank you for fueling our hard work with delicious morning donuts and putting the final touches on the bikes before they were ready to ride.

Blue Ridge Bicycles: We couldn't do this without your support—thank you for helping us get all the tools and supplies needed to build these bikes today and maintain them down the road.

Elite Painting Services: Thank you Joey Wheeling for putting in the work and helping us push through! Joey Wheeling was a huge help getting all of those heavy bikes unboxed and ready to build. We really appreciate the extra muscle.

School Board Member Michael Birchenough: Thank you for stopping by to support our kids and this program.

It was a fantastic day filled with teamwork, test rides, and lots of smiles. Bikes were built, tires were pumped, and fun was had by all.

THE BIKES ARE HERE!

We are thrilled to announce that we’ve officially received 30 brand-new bikes and helmets courtesy of Specialized and our Outride Ride for Focus grant! We are so excited to get this program rolling, but we have one small problem...

They’re all sitting in boxes, and we need to assemble them!

To get everything ready for our riders, we will be having a bike building meetup!

The Details:
When: Saturday, August 15 | Bike building starts at 9:00 AM

Where: Our new bike barns (storage containers located just inside the gates to the field football field, near the athletics entrance of the building)

Who: Everyone! Whether you’re handy with a wrench or just want to see what all the excitement is about, come check out the new space.

Bring Your Bikes! Kids and adults are encouraged to bring their own rides and enjoy cruising around campus while we work. Come for the bike building, stay for the riding, or just swing by to celebrate with us.

BIG THINGS ARE ROLLING into Daniel Morgan Middle School!
We are incredibly proud to announce that DMMS has been awarded the Outride: Riding for Focus grant! This initiative is dedicated to using cycling to improve students' physical health, mental well-being, and academic focus.

To prepare for this exciting launch, our very own Mr. Cote and Mr. Young traveled to Morgan Hill, California, over the summer for an intensive training summit. They joined over 40 educators from across the country to learn the best practices for bringing this program to life.

Thanks to this grant, our school will receive a full fleet of bicycles and helmets provided directly by Specialized Bicycles!

Here is what that means for our students:
Gear Up & Ride: A complete fleet of Specialized bikes and helmets ready for student use.
Safe Navigation: Students will learn crucial bike handling and safety skills to navigate our community safely.
Confidence & Freedom: The program gives students the freedom to explore, build confidence, and discover their surroundings on two wheels.

We can't wait to see our students hit the ground riding this year. Stay tuned for more updates, and please join us in thanking Mr. Cote and Mr. Young for their dedication to bringing this amazing opportunity to DMMS!
