The Clowser House

The Clowser House The late eighteenth century Clowser House located at the entrance of Shawneeland. page run by The Clowser Foundation board members.

The Clowser House is a historic eighteenth century Federal style home built in the Clowser Gap, located in western Frederick County, Virginia. Surrounding the home are the Clowser Cemetery, the remains of the original Clowser homestead, a stone enclosed spring and the water driven mill. The home and surrounding area are rich in local history. Archaeological research has shown evidence of a 10,000

year old Paleolithic camp located at the spring. The 1764 raid by the Delaware Indians claimed the lives of many settlers including four Clowser family members. Artifacts from the American Civil War were found showing both Confederate and Union troops had a presence at the Clowser House. Through the years the home has suffered structural damage and is now in need of repairs. The newly formed Clowser Foundation is attempting to gain ownership of the home from Frederick County and make the repairs necessary to keep it from being demolished. The Clowser Foundation is accepting donations as well as selling prints of the home to help fund this project. Donations may be made by mailing checks to 152 Tomahawk Trail, Winchester, VA 22602

Marion Clowser, direct descendant of the first Clowser settlers in the mid 1750's, operates the grader in this 1968 photo at the Clowser house. See the text below from the post shared from the Shawneeland Through The Ages page. The Clowser Foundation seeks your support to save and preserve this historic homestead. We are currently raising funds for repairs and painting the exterior. Go to our website, ClowserFoundation.org to make your tax deductible contribution....whether it's $10 or $100, all funds are sincerely appreciated.

1968. Grading and getting the parking lot at the Council House completed. Shawneeland staffer Marion Clowser is on the grader and Project Manager Charles Wetzel man's the Cat 955 loader. The rear wood section of the Council House was demolished after 1988. The brick main house is now more commonly called the Clowser House, after the Clowser family, the homestead of early western Virginia settlers Henry Klauser/Clowser. Marion is a direct descendant. The Clowsers, along with other families settled this area in the mid 1750's. Today the Clowser Foundation supports the preservation of the house and Clowser Cemetery.
