Three years of community listening. Hundreds of conversations. One collaborative built to change what safety and well-being look like for Racine families. Before the Safety and Well-Being Collaborative launched, The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread President Marcus White and Program Officer Alexandira Smith sat down with Greg Berg on WGTD's Morning Show to share the story behind it and what comes next.

In parts of Racine, healthy and affordable food simply isn’t easy to reach because of limited nearby options, rising costs, and barriers to access. The Safety and Well-Being Collaborative is mapping those gaps and building solutions to close them.

Leanna worked her way up to a salaried role she earned. At her review, she told her boss she couldn’t accept the raise because her son depends on Medicaid. Accepting more would cut her benefits in half. Her story shaped one of the solutions the Safety and Well-Being Collaborative is building to help families keep moving forward, even when the unexpected gets in the way.

For the past three years, the Safety and Well-Being Collaborative has been listening to Racine families: What does it actually take to raise a family here? What gets in the way? What would help? We heard a lot. And we built something in response. We can’t wait to share more with you later this month.

Strategic clarity starts with dedicated space.

The Sojourner Family Peace Center Board of Directors gathered at The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread for a strategy retreat. Together strengthen organizational vision, deepen community partnerships, and advance Sojourner’s mission of supporting survivors and families.

The work of organizations like Sojourner is both urgent and enduring. Providing dedicated time and space for strategic planning is one of the ways we support leaders who are doing work that matters.

Last week, The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread was proud to co-host “Expanding Housing Options in Racine County: Opportunities for Local Leaders”, a focused conversation bringing together elected officials and business leaders to tackle one of the region’s most pressing challenges.

After a presentation by Jenny Trick, Director of Racine County Economic Development Corporation, the panel brought sharp, experienced perspectives: Lafayette Crump, Commissioner of City Development for the City of Milwaukee; Eric Leabough, Director of Community Revitalization in Henrico County; and Josh Schoemann, County Executive of Washington County.

Moderated by Johnson Foundation President Marcus White. Together, they explored housing and demographic trends, innovative strategies for expanding attainable housing, and pilot opportunities that could make a real difference locally.

The panel was just the beginning. After inspiring closing remarks from Racine County Executive, Ralph Malicki, participants stayed to continue the conversation, connect, and explore what’s possible together.

This is the kind of collaborative, solutions-oriented work we are proud to be part of. We’re grateful to our partners at Racine County and RCEDC for making it happen.
