Grand Midway Hotel

Grand Midway Hotel 130 years haunted and getting worse... Paranormal teams may rent the entire hotel for private investigations. No place like it. Not for everyone. Snoop around!

Or, book your business or private party ghost tour. This is a one of a kind location. We've grown into a little campus with the Grand Midway Hotel, Shakespeare House, Midway Elf House, American Renaissance Church, Graveyard, among other locations. We are most popular around Halloween. The scene is a lot of paranormal enthusiasts and ghost hunters, but also a little of Andy Warhol's Factory, Disney

's Haunted Mansion, Hearst's Castle, Hollywood's Magic Castle, Coppola's Zoetrope, Forrest Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland, Alex Grey's CoSM, Lord Byron's Villa Diodati, Allen Ginsberg's kitchen, and Prince's Paisley Park. Though the Grand Midway was an invitation-only, haunted private home for twenty years, we now open to the public for creepy overnight stays on weekends ($150 a suite) or ghost hunt team investigations rental ($450 entire hotel). Text 310-827-1748. Buy cool swag! Support monsters! The hotel has an elaborate web page to experience the full picture: www.GrandMidwayHotel.com

Everyone has taken pics in the coffin backroom and sometimes freaky stuff has been captured. So, there is a team investigating here tonight. A young woman lay back in the one casket, and... Doesn't it look like a male ghost hand quick reached up and grabbed over her mouth?! Maybe its just a photographic anomaly, but Yikes!

Yesterday I went into the Canopy Room alone and told it, "Paranormal investigators are coming for the night". I leaned in close to the lifesize Lilly doll, requesting, "Please communicate through their devices and thoroughly spook them." The team sent me this text about their night...

I've been doing some very romantic things (part II)... So, I lined the parking lot with Spring blooming trees. We planted the biggest tree this morning. For the mural on the side of the old Windber radio station 1350 AM (which I bought and am totally fixing up) the final theme is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's haunting ballad 'Ulalume'. Terence Kauffman (who painted the Tarot Card in the hotel and the Salvator Mundi in the church) painted what became the large Psyche from the ballad, the woman on right. Camille Zamboni (who painted the Ouija Board, with others) painted the Edgar Allan Poe, bottom left. My daughter Luna painted the lone creepy moon, top left. I painted the gold shreds of light coming off Psyche's head and Poe's gaze of blue with stars. More to come... To decorate this even further a few QR codes will take the viewer to Damien Youth's love songs as well as Poe's 'Ulalume'... (Maybe Martha who died here on 4rth of July, 1911, is a little tied in with this as well...)

The Frankenstein Awards now has an official date, official location, and an official Master of Ceremonies!!! The Frankenstein Awards will be held at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Thursday October 29th, with Master of Ceremonies Butch Patrick (AKA Eddie Munster from the Munsters)!!! Woo hoo!!! (Sorry Windber, I tried to make it a town event but was shut down by our local Arcadia Theater. But, in retrospect, this ended up being a fantastic thing.). The Andy Warhol Museum will bring great artistic and cultural prestige to our endeavors. The aim is to champion young monster filmmakers and give them a target to compete and rise in their artistry as well as a context for their work to be celebrated. Currently the very creepy trophies are being minted! Currently films are already being considered! Info on tickets to event will be posted later in summer. Any one, any age, may enter their film project in the Frankenstein Awards. See Filmfreeway.com/FrankensteinAwards

I'm finally creating the long-awaited Anne Rice Collection displays in the Midway. If you are an Anne Rice fan it will be something worth seeing. The painting is of Anne's child vampire Claudia, painted by her biographer Katherine Ramsland. The doll beneath it was owned by Anne, donated by her 15 year+ assistant Sue Quiroz. The window is open barely a crack so the wind in this room is making a long slow whistling purr in an otherwise totally silent three story haunted hotel. To stand in front of this is eerie, like time has paused, and they are aware and looking back at you.

This event, a Windber Fall Festival, is not real...yet. It is just wishful thinking for a possibility. This entire area is so beautiful in the fall. At sunrise when the woods are full of colored leaves and the fog sifts through it? Oo la la so enchanting. Last summer Windber had a really fantastic summer event, with bands and the street shut off and all kinds of summer fun! It was such a cool cool cool cool cool small town summer event! One of the summer event organizers approached me that night in the thick of it all, asking, Why don't we host a Fall Festival in Windber too? I said I'd play ANY role! I'd open my hotel for historic haunted tours and add some signature to the event too. The organizers found it was just too soon to pull off an entire follow up event last year. But maybe this year it could happen, so I'm just floating the idea out there to hotel fans who might enjoy visiting... One decision that was discussed was scheduling a fall festival so it would not be competing with every other local Fall Festival and Halloween event out here. One suggestion was the weekend after Halloween, Saturday Nov 7. And for my own signature contribution as promised? I've launched the Frankenstein Awards Film Festival. I've already gone public with this part. You can find it at FilmFreeway.com/FrankensteinAwards (Johnstown -next town over- had a wonderful, warm town event film festival a decade back. It was a real blast. Lots of local folks joined in. A film festival adds a cultural distinction to a town. I was inspired by their event to pick up the torch and attempt a festival here.). (I was also big time inspired to do something cool that champions those half a dozen kids in every small town who go out on their bikes with epic big dreams and a video camera and make that short first horror movie. It's such a creative step! I was one of those kids. I would have loved a festival that recognizes that effort with real distinction for young people and awards trophies and has some Hollywood celebrity host ripping open envelopes to announce the winners!). Anyway, an all-on-board Windber Fall Festival is still just a thought, but maybe it could happen. Why not? Couldn't you just see it if every Windber possibility from one end of town -Comics World and Lucky Two Coffee House- to the other end with Leone's Market and the Windber Public Library- got on board with open doors, and sweater-wearing folks from nearby towns walked our street from one end to the other, popping in the Rustic Blend for coffee, and then visiting all our other fine local restaurants -Mimo's, Carolyn's, Crowsey's, Windber Hotel, Zeigler's, D'Arcs, Windber Wok, Town Tavern, Bella's Pizza (Bela Lugosi's pizza, yikes!) for fun designed fall snacks and spooky drinks? A historic walking tour of the town? And all those classic cars lining the street? Wine tasting at the community center? A costume contest? Our small town Windber Halloween parade? That fun annual fall event hosted by the Fire Department? Kids bobbing for apples? Pumpkin carving? Bands on the center corner across from Sheetz? Hay rides? Haunted tours of the Midway? Spotting that one hearse that drives all over town? The always fantastic Halloween window-dressing at the flower shop? A walk-in film festival at some local establishment as beautiful as the Arcadia Theater? Venders of all kinds? Gobs of gobs? All in one cool fun Fall small town night?!!! I'd go to that! All just a thought for now... but some local businesses are already talking about the event as a possibility. I for one got a call. So if it doesn't happen, it was still a really neat idea. Maybe it still will one day. So Windber, if enthusiasm builds, count me in.
