As American citizens, voting should not be difficult or complicated. Yet navigating the process
can often feel confusing. The best way to ensure your voice is heard is to understand the rules,
know the deadlines, and be prepared before Election Day.
First, check your voter registration status and party affiliation. It only takes about 30 seconds to
confirm what information the state has on file for you. You can do so through the New
Hampshire Secretary of State’s Voter Information Lookup or through Vote.org.
If you are not registered to vote, New Hampshire allows voters to register before the election
through the town clerk’s office or on Election Day at the polling location, you can register up to
6-13 days before the election at the town clerk’s office, or at Windham High School polling
location on election day. The Supervisors of the Checklist also hold voter registration sessions
before elections. To register and vote on Election Day, you must be in line before the polls close.
Voters who qualify for absentee voting may request an absentee ballot through the town clerk’s
office. To receive a ballot by mail, requests should be made as early as possible before the
election.
If you wish to change your party affiliation before a state primary election, you must do so
before the first Wednesday in June prior to the election (June 2nd 2026) . Changes can be made
through the town clerk’s office or at a scheduled meeting of the supervisors of the checklist.
However, affiliation changes cannot be made during the filing period for the primary election
through Election Day itself.
Undeclared voters may still participate in state and presidential primaries. At the polls,
undeclared voters will be asked to choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot. For specific
deadlines related to party affiliation changes and voter registration, consult the New Hampshire
Secretary of State’s election deadlines information.
