Earlier today, Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren signed a proclamation officially declaring May 17–23, 2026 as Navajo Nation Emergency Medical Services Week, in conjunction with National EMS Week observed across the United States.

National EMS Week serves as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the dedication, sacrifice, and lifesaving work of EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and first responders who serve their communities each and every day.

This year’s Navajo EMS theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” honors the collective efforts of our EMT Recruits, Emergency Medical Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, Supervisors, Field Operations Managers, EMS Instructors/Coordinators, support staff, and administrators who work tirelessly to provide emergency medical care across the Navajo Nation.

In 2025 alone, Navajo EMS field personnel responded to more than 22,000 calls for service across the Navajo Nation’s 27,000 square miles, with all 13 EMS stations working together to serve our communities. The commitment and dedication of our EMS professionals never goes unnoticed, and during this week, and every day, we proudly recognize their service.

Throughout the week, EMS stations across the Navajo Nation will host events and activities in celebration of Navajo Nation Emergency Medical Services Week.

Thank you to all of our EMS professionals for your unwavering commitment to serving the Navajo people.

Navajo Nation EMS requests the public’s assistance regarding a break-in that occurred at our headquarters in Window Rock, AZ.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. today, an individual gained entry through a secured rear window and stole several items, including a department-issued vehicle. The incident has been reported to local and federal authorities, and we are working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

At this time, the following items have been confirmed stolen:
• White 2023 Subaru Impreza (GSA vehicle), License Plate: G13A1835
• Motorola portable radios (XPR 7550E – black; APX 8000 – lime green)
• One ballistic vest (Navajo Nation EMS)
• Vehicle Keys

This incident has no impact on our ability to respond to emergencies, and services remain fully operational.

We are asking the community to stay alert. If you see any of these items or notice suspicious activity, please contact local law enforcement.

We appreciate your support as we work through this situation.

Navajo EMS Skills Day in action.

Our paramedics spent the day sharpening the skills that matter most when seconds count. From managing difficult and pediatric airways to working through high-intensity trauma scenarios, every station was built to challenge real-world decision-making.

We also focused on PIT Stop CPR, reinforcing a team-based approach to cardiac arrest care that emphasizes efficiency, communication, and high-quality compressions with minimal interruptions.

This training was made even stronger through our partnership with Granite Mountain Training, bringing hands-on instruction, scenario-based learning, and practical feedback our crews can immediately apply in the field.

Days like this aren’t just about checking a box; they’re about staying sharp, building confidence, and making sure we’re ready for whatever comes next.

Proud of the dedication our crews continue to show in delivering high-quality care to our communities.

Today, Navajo Nation EMS crews from our Tohajiilee station responded alongside our public safety partners to an officer-involved shooting in the Tohajiilee community.

We want to recognize the professionalism and quick action of our ambulance crews who responded and worked closely with law enforcement to provide emergency care during a rapidly developing situation.

We are also grateful for the support of EMS physicians from the UNM EMS Consortium, who serve as Navajo Nation EMS Medical Directors. The physicians intercepted our ambulances and assisted our crews in providing care to the injured officers, demonstrating the strength of our medical partnership and team response.

Our thoughts are with the two Navajo Police officers who were injured. We wish them both a full and speedy recovery.

We also thank Navajo Police Department, New Mexico State Police, Laguna Police Department, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the FBI, and all responding agencies who worked together during this incident.

Please keep the injured officers, their families, and all first responders in your thoughts.
