Miss Navajo Nation STEM-sation Event – Rock Point Community School
Rock Point, AZ | Thursday, March 27, 2025

The Navajo Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation Department (NAMLRD) proudly participated in the Miss Navajo Nation STEM-sation event held at Rock Point Community School on Thursday, March 27, 2025. The event kicked off promptly at 8:00 AM, welcoming approximately 250 students and teachers for a full day of STEM-focused outreach and hands-on engagement.

The team set up next to BIA Forestry and Wildland Fire Management, District 18, and shared educational resources and career information with enthusiastic students.

At the NAMLRD booth, students received promotional items such as pencil pouches, sunglasses, USB drives, and notebooks, all designed to inspire curiosity and support learning.

The event wrapped up at 3:00 PM, leaving students inspired and energized about opportunities in STEM fields within the Navajo Nation. A group photo captured the moment, highlighting the collaboration and spirit of the day.

STEM-sation ended its 2024 spring semester on a high note. Thank you to the Navajo Nation First Lady- Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren and Miss Navajo- Amy Reeves Begaye, for speaking at Monument Valley High school. A big shoutout to DOE-LM/RSI for spearheading this event; it was a success!

As always AML had a blast interacting with the students and bringing the knowledge of reclamation to this younger generation.

Until the next one 🧬🥼🔭🧪👩🏽‍🔬👨🏽‍🔬

Last week AML participated in the Navajo-Hopi DOE Triannual. It was hosted by DOE in Grand Junction, CO. Overall we had good discussions, updates, and feedback.

It’s always a great time to see our partners and get together in person.

We also toured the Grand Junction UMTRA site.

NAMLRD attended and set up a booth at the Uranium 101 Resource Fair in Thoreau, NM; at the Thoreau Chapter House.

A special thank you to the CON team, in particular Shine Salt with DOE-LM, for putting this event together for the public.

Knowledge is power and the communities of the NN need to know what uranium is, so they can lose their fear of the "yellow rock", and be empowered with having their voices heard. ✊

STEM-station at Newcomb High School, was a big success!

Thank you to President Buu Nygren for taking the time to come and speak encouraging words to the students.

And a big thank you to our sponsors: NTEC, NAMLRD, DOE-LM, Dine College, BHP and APS, for hosting another great event and NAMLRD for taking the lead for this event.

On March 14, 2024, our department (NAMLRD) hosted an on-site meeting with US EPA (Region 9 & Flagstaff office), Navajo EPA, and the 25th Navajo Nation Council Resource & Development Committee regarding funding for NAMLRD, AUM cleanup, and US EPA/Navajo EPA as Co-Regulator Authorities.

This extensive discussion between stakeholders was the first of many in support of land reclamation, revitalization, and stewardship. 🏜️

The inclement weather and imminent Spring Break didn’t stop us from participating in Hunters Point Boarding School’s Family STEM and Resource Fair! 🦅

It’s always inspiring to meet with students, parents, faculty, and community members to discuss STEM opportunities on and across the Navajo Nation; as well as the extensive work of our department. 🏜️⚒️
