HAPPENING NOW: Navajo Department of Emergency Management Holds Tracking Training

Twelve participants including officers and civilian staff from the Navajo Police Department, NPD Missing Persons Unit, Navajo Department of Emergency Management, and Apache County Sheriffs Office attend the first day of Tracking Training held by Freddy Osuna, from Greenside Training, LLC.

Osuna, a member of the Pascua Yaqui tribe, is a professional tracker and has 19 years of tracking experience. A former Marine, he believes tracking is part of Indigenous heritage because it is something that is handed down by generations.

“I am an ambassador of tracking. It’s not a dying skill. People have lost interest in it.”

We are saddened to share the identity of the crewmember we lost on the Frijoles Fire in northern New Mexico on Sunday. Randy Lupe, 62, of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, died following a medical emergency.

Lupe was a U.S. Wildland Fire Service temporary emergency support crewmember on the San Carlos camp crew, which was supporting federal wildfire response on the Frijoles Fire.
Out of consideration for the family, the Interior Department is not releasing additional medical information at this time.

This loss is felt deeply across the wildland firefighting community, and our thoughts are with all those affected.
