In the wake of the rapid spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) on the Navajo Nation and the Legislative Branch closure, coupled with the Nation’s state of emergency declaration, the Office of Navajo Government Development is CLOSED until further notice.

Two staff from the Office of Government Development attended the 2020 Waste Management Sustainability Forum. A one-day event that brings together thought leaders from both business and civic sectors to exchange ideas and create innovative strategies around sustainability. This one-day conference is held every year in conjunction with the Waste Management Phoenix Open. ONGD staff gained first-hand sustainability insights from world-class speakers and learn how they can put them into practice for the Navajo Nation. ONGD will introduce NN sustainability policy and guidelines via legislation to complement our commitment to sustainability. Yes, that’s John Kerry, 68th Secretary of State (2013-2017).

The 24th Navajo Nation Council confirmed the appointment of Ms. Lorencita Willie as the Diné College student representative to the Commission on Navajo Government Development with a 23-0-1 vote. Congratulations

President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer giving their State of the Nation address to the 24th Navajo Nation Council Winter Session. There was some level of tense moments and abundant of questions and disagreements, but the tone changed to have both OPVP & NNC work cooperatively in the spirit of k’é and hozhó.

NNC Budget and Finance Committee regular meeting. Legislation No. 0383-19 was added to the agendahttp://www.navajonationcouncil.org/Legislations/2019/DEC/0383-19.pdf This Legislation elicited a lengthy discussion on NN chapter performances and especially regarding “certified” chapters and the “inconsistencies” by Administrative Support Center (ASC) on chapter finance, misuse, audit findings, and the effectiveness of the constant trainings amid high chapter staff turnover. The legislation passed.

Day two of Navajo Nation Council Naabik’íyátí’ Title II Reform Subcommittee work session. ONGD staff presented to nine designates who actively engaged and discussed the need to reform key areas in Title 2 of the Navajo Nation Code.

Day one of NNC Naabik’íyáti Title II Reform Subcommittee work session. Navajo lawmakers discussed numerous area in Title 2 of Navajo Nation Code to possibly reform. The Government Development team will present its own version tomorrow.

The Office of Government Development spans beyond the United States in rendering a brotherhood hand to our sister Nation up north - the Anishinaabe people of the Anishinabek Nation. There are additional plans for an eventual Nation-to-Nation visit to Navajo Nation Capital in Window Rock and possibly an international treaty on sustainability and the preservation of culture and language. I am proud of our staff Mr. EJ John and former policy analyst Jamie Henio, who's now the Honorable Chairperson of the 24th Navajo Nation Council Budget and Finance Committee. 🥇🙌
