Pursuant to reports from the recent Tribal Interior Budget Council meeting held in Fairbanks, Alaska On July 31-August 2, 2019, the BIE is no longer in the business of working directly with BIE-funded schools, except where absolutely necessary. Instead, the “BIE promotes tribal nation-building and self-determination, empowers tribal communities, fosters tribal self-sufficiency, creates educational and economic opportunities, and preserves and fosters cultural heritage.”

An example of the BIE’s commitment to working with tribal governments — instead of working with schools — is that the BIE proposes to eliminate the funding for Higher Education Scholarships in the FY 2020 budget.
The BIE’s idea of creating “economic opportunities” is to eliminate the funding for school construction in the FY 2020 budget.
