Your Windsor Heights Firefighters provided mutual aid to Norwalk FD for a working structure fire.

WHFD Personnel on scene:
Lieutenant Jones
FF/EMT TJ Ahrens
FF/EMT Spencer Johnson

NORWALK, IA - May 7, 2026 - Last night, at 11:58 PM the Norwalk Fire Department was dispatched to 1019 E 17th Street, Country View Apartments, on the report of a structure fire. While enroute, crews noted flames coming from the structure and immediately upgraded the assignment to a Working Fire - 1st Alarm, requesting assistance from mutual aid agencies.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions on the northwest corner of the building. Personnel from the Norwalk Fire Department and Police Department assisted multiple residents with evacuating the structure under smoky conditions while fire crews initiated an aggressive exterior attack. A third alarm was requested to provide additional aerial suppression resources. The fire was brought under control shortly after 1:30 a.m., and crews remain on scene.

DART was requested to provide a temporary area of refuge and eventual transportation to an off-site community building. All residents are displaced at this time. Those in need have been placed in temporary housing and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Five cats were safely removed from the building and returned to their owners.

The Norwalk Fire Department was assisted by the West Des Moines Fire Department, Urbandale Fire Department, Windsor Heights (Iowa) Fire Department, Northern Warren Fire Department, Carlisle Fire Department, Indianola Fire Department, Norwalk Police Department, Iowa, Warren County Sheriff's Office, Westcom Emergency Communications, West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services, Polk County Emergency Management Agency, Iowa Warren County Iowa Emergency Management, DART, and the American Red Cross

One resident was evaluated with minor smoke inhalation but refused transport on the scene. No other injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. No initial damage estimates are being provided at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

WHFD prioritizes providing our members with opportunities to participate in outside training and is committed to the continuous growth and professional development of our line staff.

This week, in partnership with the Windsor Heights Fire Fighters Association and Metro Area Firefighters & EMS L5274, Engineers Price, Muerner, and Melody proudly represented Windsor Heights at FDIC International (Fire Department Instructors Conference). While there, they participated in several 1 hour and 45 minute classroom sessions and explored the newest equipment the fire service has to offer.

Sending our members to a major conference like this ensures our department stays up to date with the latest tactics, technologies, and leadership strategies in the fire service. It allows our personnel to grow professionally, return with valuable knowledge to share with the team, and ultimately enhances the level of service and safety we provide to Windsor Heights and our surrounding communities.

This year was especially meaningful at FDIC, as the conference was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. We remember the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that day, along with the many others we have lost since. The conference featured numerous exhibits and tributes honoring those we’ve lost and continuing the promise to never forget.

Courses attended included:

- 10 Hose Stretches Every Firefighter Should Know
- 30 Fires You Must Know
- Aggressive Search Culture
- Big Box Fire = Big Ground Scraper Problems
- Care Bias in Emergency Services
- Developing Smoke Skills Because Smoke Kills
- Don’t Lose Yourself: First Responder Mental Health Playbook
- Efficient & Effective Commercial Forcible Entry
- Fireground Tactics for Storefronts, Taxpayers, & Strip Malls

Ember is retiring!!!! Joining the Windsor Heights Fire Department in September 2016 as a 9-week-old puppy, Ember has served her crewmates with unwavering loyalty, reliability, and support for the majority of her life. Throughout her time of service, Ember has consistently represented the department with distinction and support, contributing to crew morale and public engagement for nearly a decade. She has been present for countless public relations events and department activities. With a crew mentality, she gets up for calls overnight with the crew, often waiting for them to return before going back to bed. Ember’s presence and dependability have made a lasting impact on the Windsor Heights Fire Department members, Windsor Heights employees, and the community we serve.

Ember’s service has exemplified dedication, loyalty, and commitment to the mission of the Windsor Heights Fire Department. Ember has dedicated her entire life to the fire service and Windsor Heights community. Retirement will allow Ember to enjoy a comfortable and well-earned conclusion to her time in the fire service, while also preserving her legacy within the Windsor Heights Fire Department. Ember's last day on shift was officially April 21st, but we are sure she will stop in to visit us when she can.

We are currently planning a fitting retirement celebration for our crew mate, so please be on the lookout for the announcement!
