Arrest made in Anthony “Tops” Williams homicide

On 9/25/2026, Investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants for Jikeveyon Mitchell (18) of Washington, NC, for the murder of Anthony “Tops” Williams.

Mitchell was taken into custody on 9/24/2026 in Martin County for outstanding attempted murder charges from Northampton County. Mitchell was served with Bertie County charges today.

Mitchell has been confined in Halifax County Jail under no bond.

This investigation started on 9/21/2026 and is still under investigation.

The Bertie County Sheriff's Office is investigating its 5th homicide of 2026.

9/21/2026 at 8:14 a.m., the Bertie County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to an address in the 400 block of Republican Rd., Windsor, in reference to a person who had been shot.

Deputies arrived on scene at 8:23 AM to find a 48-year-old male deceased from gunshot wounds. The victim's identity will not be released until the County Sheriff has met with the immediate family.

Investigators along with the State Bureau of Investigation, have begun the investigation to uncover the events that led up to the homicide.

Sheriff Tyrone M. Ruffin: Today, our County will make the news headlines again because of senseless gun violence. Today, my Office is investigating its 5th homicide in 2026. Based on the analytics my staff ran today, none of these homicides show a connection to each other. Out of the 5 homicides, my investigators have solved 3. We will find the person responsible for the September 9th, 2026, homicide on Nowell Farm Road in Colerain, and we will find the person responsible for this tragic incident today.

Of the incidents that have occurred in 2026, one occurred in the town of Aulander; another occurred outside of Aulander. One incident occurred in Lewiston, one in Colerain, and today in Windsor.  The incidents have been sporadic and not in specific locations, which means incidents like these are sometimes beyond our control. What will say is that violence is not the answer. Let us continue to pray for the family and friends of the victims.

IN CUSTODY
Homeowner caught breaking-and-entering suspect in the act.

On 9/15/2026 at 9:14 am, deputies with the Bertie County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Sally Freeman Rd. Colerain, in reference to a break-in in progress, and the owner had the suspect at gunpoint. Upon the deputies arrival, they took Carlton Moore (44) of Colerain into custody.

While investigating this home break-in, deputies developed Moore as the suspect who broke into another home in the 200 block of Sally Freeman Road last week. After deputies took Moore into custody, a search of his residence revealed items stolen from the home broken into last week on Sally Freeman Road.

Defendant: Carlton Moore (44) of Colerain
Charges: 2x Breaking and entering, 2x Larceny after breaking and entering, 2x Possession of Stolen Goods.

Moore will be housed in Durham County Jail.

Arrest made in church break-in incident reported on 6/26/2026.

The Bertie County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division has obtained warrants for Joseph Herman Daniels (43) of Aulander for Break/Enter Place of Worship, Felony Larceny Chose in Action, Forgery of Instrument, Felony Possession of Stolen Goods, and Felony Uttering Forged Endorsement. Daniels was already in custody in Hertford County Jail, and that’s where he was served on 9/8/2026

The initial report was made on 6/26/2026 at Conocanary Baptist Church in Hexlena. Surveillance tape showed the suspect entering and exiting the church. Investigators were able to link Daniels to the church break-in after a forged check was cashed. Through the investigation, technology, and the church's cooperation, investigators obtained warrants for Daniels. Daniels remains in Hertford County Jail.

The Bertie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a su***de that occurred in the 300 block of Green Cross Road, Windsor.

9/11/2026, Bertie County Communications received a 911 call at 8:29 PM about a suicidal person. An EMS employee was the first on scene and found the victim unresponsive. Upon the arrival of additional EMS personnel and law enforcement, they identified Johnny Thomas (54) of Windsor, deceased from a gunshot wound.

Thomas was a defendant in a s*x crime against a child/children case that began in 2021, and his trial was scheduled for 9/28/2026.

In 2021, the Bertie County Sheriff's Office received a report of a s*x crime, and Thomas was the alleged perpetrator. The 2021 investigation resulted in Thomas being arrested and charged with 21 total s*x crime charges on 03/21/2022. After the initial charges against Thomas, more victims came forward, reporting that they were victims of s*x offenses and identified Thomas as the perpetrator.

After more victims came forward, Investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff's Office conducted numerous interviews and obtained more charges against Thomas. Investigators arrested Thomas again on April 3rd, 2023. Thomas was released again after he satisfied his bond.

All the victims in the Johnny Thomas case have been notified of this incident tonight, and the next of kin have been notified.
