For many family w**eries, the goal isn't simply to build a successful business.
It's to build something worth passing on.

A vineyard planted today may be farmed by the next generation. A w**ery started by two people can grow into a business where children, siblings and extended family work alongside one another.

That long-term perspective changes how you think about the land, the business and the community around you.

Across California, family w**eries carry forward what previous generations built while adapting to an industry that keeps changing.
Every bottle has a story. Sometimes that story takes generations to tell.

Independent w**eries need a voice in Sacramento.
Family W**emakers of California is the only statewide organization focused specifically on advocating for independent, family-owned w**eries at the state level.

Legislation that affects the w**e industry doesn't affect every w**ery in the same way. A regulatory change that a large corporation can absorb may create a very different burden for a small, family-run operation.
That's why representation matters.

We work to ensure the needs and realities of family w**eries are part of the conversation when decisions are made—and that independent producers have a collective voice advocating for their future.

When family w**eries come together, that voice becomes stronger.

Welcome, Serres Ranch W**es!
A century on the land, six generations strong

Family W**emakers of California is delighted to welcome Serres Ranch W**es of Sonoma Valley as our newest member, a family whose California roots run back more than 150 years and whose ranch has been in family hands for over a century.
The story begins in 1872, when John P. Serres arrived in San Francisco. In 1924, he moved the family to a ranch along Highway 12 between Agua Caliente and Glen Ellen, and the Serres have owned and farmed it ever since.

For decades, it was a dairy and row-crop operation. Grapes came with the fourth generation, when John Serres planted vines in the early 1980s with help from neighbor and fellow Sonoma pioneer Jim Bundschu. Before long, some of the region’s most respected w**eries sought Serres Ranch fruit.

The ranch sits in a narrow pinch of the Valley of the Moon, where the surrounding mountains create a distinctive microclimate. Geothermal warmth beneath the vines keeps frost at bay, making the site ideal for structured, world-class reds. The family’s philosophy is simple: plant what grows best here, not what’s trendy. Today, the 200-acre ranch includes about 130 acres of vineyard and has been certified sustainable since 2015.

In 2021, the family took the next step and released w**es under its own name. Taylor Serres Murnig, who leads w**emaking and helps run the farming operation, spearheaded the effort alongside her father, John, and her brothers, Buck and John Marshall. Every bottle is 100% estate-grown, including the flagship Marshall Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

Beyond w**e, the Serres family also raises cattle, grows blueberries in Mendocino County, and runs a construction business, all guided by the family motto,

“Our handshake is our word.”

When you support a family-owned w**ery, that support reaches far beyond the tasting room.

California's independent w**eries are employers, farmers, land stewards, customers of other local businesses and members of their communities. They hire local crews, work with local growers and vendors, welcome visitors to California's w**e regions and help sustain the communities around them.

Behind each w**ery is a business someone built, invested in and continues to work hard to keep moving forward.

Supporting family-owned w**eries helps keep California w**e diverse, local and connected to the people and places that make it special.

Family W**emakers of California represents w**eries from w**e regions throughout the state, including many of the family-owned producers working to keep California's independent w**e community strong.

California W**e Month may be September, but supporting California's family w**eries is something we can do all year long.

Family-owned isn't a marketing phrase. It means something.

It can mean parents working alongside their children.

A vineyard passed from one generation to the next.

A family taking the risk to plant their first vines or open their first tasting room.

It can mean decades of work invested into a piece of land, a community and a business with the hope that there will be something worth passing on.

Family-owned w**eries come in different sizes and look different throughout California, but they share something important: real people and families are behind the decisions they make every day.

During California W**e Month, we're celebrating them.

A win for California w**eries.

We are proud to celebrate the signing of SB 917, legislation co-sponsored by Family W**emakers of California and the California Association of W**egrape Growers and authored by Senator John Laird.

SB 917 modernizes California’s Type 79 certified farmers market permit by allowing non-estate w**eries to sell their w**es at farmers markets and instead of just one w**ery per market being allowed to offer tastings, market organizers now decide how many are allowed.

Harvest is moving fast this year!

We checked in with Family W**emakers of California Vice President and Dot W**e co-founder Lise Asimont for an update from the 2026 harvest.

“For Dot W**e, this harvest has been three to four weeks early and extremely fast. We’re working with Sonoma County vineyards and just added two in Mendocino County. We’re super happy with the quality we have in tank right now and have even pressed off our first red fermentation to barrel.

We’re seeing big, lifted aromatics and gorgeous tannin and color. This vintage is as pretty as it is early and fast. Aloha!”
