Please help us to congratulate Firefighter/Engineer Keith Baum on passing the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy's Firefighter I ProBoard Certification.

Keith is an integral part of our company and is appreciated for the behind the scenes work he does to keep our apparatus in good working order. He was recently recognized for his service by being awarded the Chief's Award for 2025.

For those of you that aren't familiar, the ProBoard represents the national and international gold standard for professional qualifications. Managed through accredited agencies like the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy, it ensures that a firefighter's training meets the strict benchmarks set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Earning this credential requires answering a demanding call to service, including:

Academic Mastery: Passing a comprehensive written examination covering fire science, building construction, hazardous materials, and incident command structures.

Practical Competency: Being rigorously tested on critical hands-on skills—known as Job Performance Requirements (JPRs)—under the strict observation of independent evaluators. There is no margin for error when it comes to structural search, ventilation, and life safety.

Why this standard matters to our community:

Uncompromising Safety: It guarantees that the personnel responding to your worst day possess the exact skills and baseline knowledge required to mitigate emergencies safely and efficiently.

National Portability: It signifies that our local responders train to the same exacting standards as the premier fire departments across the country.

Professional Accountability: It marks the foundational stepping stone for senior positions, ensuring future fire officers are built on a bedrock of proven capability.

Firefighter Michael Spickler

Mike came to Laurel with no previous fire service history. Mike began as a Fire Police officer, after completing his Basic and Advanced Fire Police certification.

At the end of last month, Mike completed his interior firefighter certification and will serve in both roles moving forward.

This past Monday, Assistant Chief Kevin Gibney and Chief Dave Rittenhouse travelled to the “Blue Floor” at Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, Wisconsin for final inspection of the new Engine 37. After many hour of inspection, a small punch list was created and Pierce got right on it. As of Thursday, all items were completed and is awaiting a driver to deliver to Glick Fire Equipment in Lancaster County.

Our new engine is a 2026 Pierce Enforcer with a 1000 gallon tank, 1500 gpm pump, seating for 6 and a low hose bed.

After being delivered, the engine will need lettering, radio installation, tool mounting and driver/operator training. We anticipate being able to have the new engine in service in July.

Many thanks to Cyle Sheaffer from Glick Fire Equipment and Curt Woerth (who came out of retirement briefly) to assist in the final inspection process.

Congratulations to one of our own!

Lieutenant Andrew Whitehead joined Laurel Fire in July of 2024 after moving from Lancaster County where he served with Lampeter Fire Company.

Andrew came to Laurel as a ProBoard Firefighter I and the ambition to make himself better. Over the course of the last 2 years, Andrew has served as our Fire Sergeant then rising to the position of Lieutenant. Andrew also serves as our Jr Firefighter Advisor and is a valuable member of the Laurel Fire team.

Earlier this week, Andrew received an employment offer from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue in Maryland. Lieutenant Whitehead will begin their 59th Academy on June 15th.

We are proud of you Andrew and this great accomplishment. We look forward to seeing you excel.

Professional development and Professional ProBoard testing and certification is today’s standard in the fire service.

Recently two members attended NFPA 1006 Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue Technician level training and certification testing.

Deputy Chief Souders, while having a Department of Health Basic Vehicle Rescue Technician certification already, chose to seek professional ProBoard certification.

Firefighter Keith Baum, an experienced firefighter also wished to further his training and sought professional ProBoard certification.

Both members completed the educational portion of the class, successfully completed the Job Performance Requirements and are awaiting results of the written test.

ProBoard certifications require competent demonstration of applied skills along with comprehension of theories and tactics.

We congratulate these two gentlemen and their continuing commitment to Laurel Fire and the communities we serve.

Congratulations to one of our own. Fire Police Sgt Landon Campbell spent many hours over the past 6 months in the classroom and countless hours studying while preparing to test for National Registry Emergency Medical Technician. Last week, he achieved this goal.

EMT Campbell is our fourth member to hold a current EMT certification. Great work Landon.

Last evening at our company level training, members refreshed on bus emergencies and the challenges faced with this type of vehicle. School Bus Operator Landon Campbell presented a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a tour of the bus allowing us to see these challenges first-hand. Many thanks to Landon and Kraft School Bus Inc for this training. After the training the members decided the bus needed a little wash, so the membership chipped in so that Landon had a clean bus to start the day.

As the impending snow storm approaches, our members and leadership team have been working diligently at an operational plan starting Saturday at 6pm until Tuesday morning.

Laurel Fire will have staff on-site, allowing us to decrease our time out the door.

We ask that during this event and any snowfall event, that you clear any hydrants near your property. Delays in securing a water source puts property, civilians and firefighters at a greater risk. Please take the time to clear 3’ around all hydrants.

Laurel Fire Company is a 100% volunteer organization with response areas in Windsor Township and Windsor Boro, along with mutual aid dispatches in many other municipalities.

We are always looking for new members to support the mission of Laurel Fire. There are opportunities as Firefighters, Fire Police and Contributing members.
