Today we pause to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day isn't about us in the fire service- it belongs to those who never came home from war. But we understand sacrifice and what it means to lose someone who answered the call. So we stand with Gold Star families, with veterans who carry the weight of friends lost, and with every community remembering a name today.

To those who made the ultimate sacrifice: thank you. We remember.

As we wind down EMS Week, we wanted to give a shout-out to our partners at Thompson Valley EMS and UCHealth EMS. Our crews swung by both with treats and dinner- a small thank-you for everything they do.

Day in and day out, they show up for our community during some of the hardest moments of people's lives, with skill, compassion, and grit. We're lucky to work alongside them on calls, and even luckier to call them partners and friends.

From all of us at Windsor Severance Fire Rescue: thank you for the care you bring, the lives you touch, and the difference you make. We see you, we appreciate you, and we're better because of you.

Tonight, two fire district residents received the WSFR Citizen Lifesaving Award for their roles in saving the life of a person who they found in cardiac arrest.

The Citizen Lifesaving Award is given to members of the public who have participated in a lifesaving effort at an emergency scene before the arrival of the Fire Department.

On the afternoon of February 17, father and son, George and Tim Brown of rural Windsor, jumped into action when they recognized the driver of a car on a rural county road was unresponsive. They called 911 and performed CPR on the driver until Fire and EMS crews arrived and took over patient care.

Thanks to their efforts, the driver was resuscitated and later discharged from the hospital with no neurological deficits.

Last night, 5 Windsor-area teens got a crash course (pun intended 🚗💥) in car emergencies at the Windsor Library! We covered what to do if your car breaks down, how to handle an accident, and even got some hands-on time too. Huge thanks to Clearview Library and their Teen Program for hosting us and making this happen. And a special shoutout to Best Insurance for sponsoring the red best practices registration/insurance folders every student took home... because knowing what to do is only half the battle; having it in your glovebox is the other half. 🗂️ These kids left way more prepared than when they walked in, and that's exactly why we do this.

This Saturday is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. We live in beautiful country here in Windsor & Severance, but we also live in wildfire country. And the good news? What you do this Saturday, May 2 can genuinely make a difference for your home and your neighbors.

Research shows that eliminating vulnerabilities in the immediate 5-foot zone around your home is one of the most impactful things you can do. We're talking small, doable changes:
🪨 Swap wood mulch for gravel near your foundation
🌿 Clear dead vegetation from your deck, porch, and eaves
🚿 Move combustible items away from the house

You don't have to redo your whole yard. Start with those five feet. That's it.
Windsor Severance Fire Rescue is here to help you figure out where to start. Visit nfpa.org/wildfire for a free home assessment checklist... and then go do the thing on Saturday.
