Mary's Place, A Center for Grieving Children and Families

Mary's Place, A Center for Grieving Children and Families Mary’s Place is a non-profit center for grieving children and families located in Windsor, CT.

We believe:
• Grief is a natural reaction to death for children as well as adults;
• Within each individual is the natural capacity to heal oneself;
• The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual; and
• Caring and acceptance assist in the healing process.

Grief touches us all. It is a reflection of the love we carry for those we have lost and a reminder that healing happens through compassion, connection, and support.

Today, we encourage open conversations about grief and remind those who are grieving that their feelings, memories, and experiences matter.

At Mary's Place, we are honored to provide a safe space for children and families to find support, understanding, and hope.

AUGUST BOOK SPOTLIGHT📚❤️: Barkley and Eve Series by: Karen L. Carney

Finding the right words to talk with children about grief and loss can be challenging. Books and activities can offer children another way to explore big feelings, ask questions, and begin conversations at their own pace.

Books in this series include:

What Is Cancer, Anyway? Explaining Cancer to Children of All Ages
Together, We'll Get Through This! Learning to Cope with Loss and Transition
Everything Changes, But Love Endures: Explaining Hospice to Children
Our Special Garden: Understanding Cremation
Honoring Our Loved Ones: Going to a Funeral
Sitting Shiva: Learning to Cope with Loss and Transition

Through stories, coloring, and age-appropriate activities, this series provides children with opportunities to learn, express themselves, and explore feelings that can sometimes be difficult to put into words. These books are helpful resources for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone supporting a child through grief or loss.

To borrow these books or any book from our lending library email [email protected] or call the center at 860-688-9621 to make an appointment to pick it up.

We grieve because we love.

Love doesn't end when someone dies; it lives on in our memories, in our relationships, and in the ways we care for one another. That's why Unite In Love is more than the name of our annual fundraiser. It's a reflection of who we are and what brings us together.

We gather to remember those we love and miss, to honor the enduring bonds that continue beyond loss, and to stand beside grieving children and families so they never have to navigate grief alone.

When we unite in love, we create hope, healing, and connection- for today and for generations to come.

We hope you'll be part of this special event as we celebrate 30 years of love, hope, and healing at Mary's Place.

Please RSVP by September 21 at marysplacect.org/unite

Did you know that Mary's Place offers peer support for teens ages 13–18?

Grieving as a teen can feel overwhelming, and it can be hard to find others who truly understand. Our group provides a safe, welcoming space where teens can connect with peers who have also experienced the death of someone important in their lives. Through shared experiences, meaningful conversations, and supportive activities, participants discover they are not alone on their grief journey.

All of our programs and services are provided at no cost. To learn more about our teen group, contact us at 860-688-9621.

On World Friendship Day, we're celebrating the community that makes hope and healing possible.

Within our center, friendships are formed through shared understanding, tears, quiet moments, and meaningful milestones. These connections remind us every day that no one has to walk the journey of grief alone.

That spirit of friendship extends far beyond our peer support groups. It lives in the generosity of our donors, whose support keeps our doors open, and in the compassion of our community partners and supporters, who believe in our mission and help us reach those who need us most.

Today, we're grateful for every friendship, every act of kindness, and every person who helps create a community where healing can happen. Happy World Friendship Day. 🌏

Vacations are often built around traditions. The places we go, people we see, and moments we share. When someone dies, those traditions naturally change, and travel can feel very different.

Grief doesn’t stay behind when we leave home. It travels with us, shaping how we experience time away, and how we stay connected to the people we’re missing.

This is what support looks like, somewhere real feelings are allowed, supported, and understood. We believe grief doesn’t require putting on a brave face. Children and families are given space to be honest about what they’re feeling, to be heard, and to be supported exactly as they are.

If you or someone you know is in need of support, please reach out. 💙
