Wednesday, May 20th - EMS for Children Day

Why EMS Week and EMSC Day Matter?

EMS professionals are often the first point of care in emergencies. Recognizing their contributions and ensuring they are equipped to care for children is key to building stronger, more effective emergency systems.

Today highlights the special needs of caring for children. There are distinctive physiological and psychological aspects of caring for children.

EMSC Day is dedicated to:
- Honoring EMS clinicians who care for children
- Raising awareness about Pediatric Readiness
- Highlighting the work of the federal EMSC Program

Tuesday, May 19th

Today is to promote safety for the EMS professional, the patient, and the public. Safety Day encourages first responders to focus on risk and prevention rather than possible negative outcomes and aims to advance safety measures for both the community and the profession.

This is a great day to highlight stress reduction, self-care, and mental health awareness programs.

If you are an EMS worker or public safety professional in Iowa experiencing chronic stress or cumulative trauma, you can access targeted mental health tools and workshops through NAMI Iowa Frontline Professionals. https://namiiowa.org/frontline-professionals/

This day highlights the ongoing training, rigorous certification, and lifelong learning required for EMS personnel to provide lifesaving emergency care.

Iowa recognizes four primary levels of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel, aligned with national standards.

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR): Administers immediate life-saving interventions (CPR, AED, bleeding control) while awaiting higher-level transport. Often consists of first responders like police, firefighters, or specialized volunteers.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): The baseline for ambulance crews. Handles basic prehospital care, airway management, and medication administration (e.g., Narcan, epinephrine).

Advanced EMT (AEMT): Performs all EMT-level skills, plus IV initiation, fluid resuscitation, and administration of a broader range of emergency medications.

Paramedic: The highest level of prehospital care. Can perform advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring, and complex pharmacological interventions.
