Observatory Hill, Winfield KS

Observatory Hill, Winfield KS Observatory Hill dates back to the late 1890's. It was the site of the Winfield Astronomical Association's observatory tower, erected in 1898.

While the telescope was never installed, the hill has been a historic landmark for well over a century.

The owners of Observatory Hill would like to take this moment to honor and remember Alan Brennan (and the Brennan family) who has been an outstanding supporter of our efforts in researching the Hill's history. Alan provided several photos that have been essential in understanding or highlighting historic events on the Hill. Examples are several unique photos that document the impact on the Hill of the 1934 continuance of 9th Ave, from College Street to the eastern boundary of the city. The Brennan family also provided a unique photo of the east-side of the Observatory tower in the late 1920's, just prior to it's demolition. This photo was important in the building of the architectural replica of the tower this year. Other photos gave us a glimpse of the Hill in the 1930's, 1960's and 1980's. Alan attended several of the recent Open Hill events. He will be greatly missed and we extend our sincere condolences to his family. We prey that God will receive Alan with all grace and mercy.

We don't often show the raccoons because their always around (and they destroyed our sweet corn), but here are two short clips. Ran into the deer family a couple of times this morning doing tasks around the Hill. As I post this, they are up by the firepit.
